I definitely get what you mean. It’s really rich and mellow, but I’ve been having a lot of medium-spice bourbons lately so it’s a nice change of pace. Definitely going to try to keep a backup bottle on hand if I can track another one down.
Also, I’ve been checked out of the game for a minute. Pretty bummed and caught off guard by Eagle Rare going allocated. Feels like it came out of nowhere, but I guess It’s my own fault for not keeping up. Used to be like JD out here, could find it anywhere for $30. Now I can’t find a bottle to save my life. Happened so fast.

Have ya paid your dues, Jack? Yessir, the check is in the mail.
Finally was able to try it alongside yellow spot that I already had a home. I am no expert but yellow definitely has a sweeter, fruity taste -milder overall. Gold packs a punch in the spice department. Aged oak comes through as well. Finishes dry like a wine. I want to compare it to red, but it's been a while since I've tried that. Will need to track down a bottle.

Question for you knowledgeable bourbon drinkers: I'm looking to purchase a bottle of something for my wife for Christmas. She likes bourbon. Buffalo Trace and Eagle Rare are her favorites. I'm looking to get her something of a similar quality to try out. Nothing too pricey ($30-$70?), something attainable in Houston. What should I get? Thanks for your advice

Ended up grabbing a bottle of Widow Jane 10 and Weller Special Reserve. I'll probably get some Makers 46 as well. Thanks for the rec
Well, Makers Mark is a wheated bourbon, so totally different mash bill than Buffalo Trace or Eagle Rare. Widow Jane is sourced bourbon either from only Kentucky (probably from Barton), or a blend of Kentucky, Indiana, and Tennessee whiskies (Barton, Midwest Grain Products, and Dickel respectively). Check the label where is says "distilled in..." Widow Jane does not actually make any whiskey themselves.
Furthermore, BT and ER are low-rye bourbons. So you'll want to look for other low-rye bourbons to really try to match the flavor profiles. My suggestions would be Michter's small batch (the black and white/off-white label, not the sour mash or rye), or Elijah Craig small batch (or the barrel proof if you want something a lot stronger), or Russel's Reserve (made by Wild Turkey).

Ya know I was gonna suggest michters small batch, but I still don't think I know anything and so I refrained. Maybe I do know something? Probably not.
Think I'll grab myself that elijah craig sb today.....maybe splurge for the barrel proof.

pay via paypal, use credit card, file dispute at the 20 day mark if suspicious. don't deal with noobs. don't trade with noobs. request feedback ahead of time. there are lots of good people 'round here.
Ayyy thanks scott. I'm just weaving my way through a few different bottles, finding my lane. Appreciate you.
