no one knows...
the show ones were purple
now some of the 10c ones were black
we're all assuming that the blacks are rare... but i don't think it's been officially said
i just want both versions

It isn't uncommon for a printer to run out of ink while printing and then substitute a similar color in order to finish the total number they had planned to print and use up all the rest of the materials. They probably ran out of purple ink and ended up using some black to finish up.
Based on the information available I think that the black whale versions are probably limited to less than 10 to 15 percent of the total print run.
-There were no claims of black whales sold at the show.
-The majority of people that ordered from 10 Club got purple whales
-Tenclub sold this poster on 9/11/06 and it took between 3 to 4 days to get them in the mail.
-Between 9/20/06 and today (10/25) EB has recorded 8 sales on ebay, of which only 1 was black
To me all this suggests that probably less than 1/4 (maybe even 1/8th) of the whales sold from 10club were black. I would expect more posters went to the actual merch stands at the show than to tenclub , but even if you split it 50/50 that would mean that at best 1 out of every 8 whales is black.
All of this probably doesn't matter anyways since most people seem to like the purple better.

Yeah Lou, I definitely noticed that there was a range of colors based on pics I've seen online. I've seen purple, jet black, and then one that is a tweener, which is the one I have. I bet a lot of ppl don't even notice the difference between black and the tweener. I think they just pushed all the purple ink they had, and then just switched it over to black. Kinda wish I had a purple, or at least black
Good job on noticing a difference in the sailor. Never noticed that.

i tried to take pics of all 3 but it doesn't show
but yes if you only have the tweener then you wouldn't know that the black one is the actual black one
i was trying to buy a friend a black and ended up with a tweener... oh well

So based on online sales, ya think the black was the rarest? Purple is probably the most produced and was the color sold at the show, and I think the tweener is what they could squeeze outta the purple ink left, while the black was probably just enough to meet the print run demand. Just my guess, but I think Black is probably the hardest to find. I've seen plenty of the tweener being sold on eBay as Black and sometimes as purple. Kinda wish the sellers would post pictures of their posters and not the file found on gigposters.com. I bet some ppl bought some tweeners labeled a purple!
My tweener is a reject , but I'll keep it...unless somebody would love to give me a purple for it
PS Maybe the pics will show a color difference better if ya take off the flash. I noticed flash distorts poster colors...such as the Toronto dragons which is blue in person but aqua in the pics.

i don't think we'll ever know. I've asked ames but just got ignored. we don't know how many sold at the show. how many sold through the 10c. at what point did the ink run out.bysleightofhand wrote:So based on online sales, ya think the black was the rarest? the person i bought the tweener from probably figured his print wasn't purple so it must be black.
i'll try the non flash approach
oh by the way... the s/n dragons are a different blue than the 10c dragons
