I don't think that guy ecoli is very good at math.

I'm also not sure why ecoli is commenting in a dan mccarthy thread if he really doesn't like dan mccarthy. Jermaine or PM are available to bust on and are much more fun to harrass..........I'd recommend you try it out.

who really cares about forsman?
I talked to Jermaine a couple of years ago and he mentioned you , but then basically shut up and didnt wanna talk about it. I assume he hates you cause you are a blatant flipper and you dont like him cause his prints dont flip really well. Is that pretty close?

Hmm, I wonder if jojo and jermaine are going to have a cup of coffee together at TRPS.

While that sounds good in theory, how has it worked in practice? I would venture that close to half of his subholders are planning on following a similar business model, not to mention that I think some people have multiple subs. I did similar math when deciding not to get a sub, in order for me to make the sub worthwhile, I would need to want 8 of the prints, which I would be buying at $47 each (includes shipping), to eclipse the $350 the sub costs. The bonus print does need to come into play, but since this year's is not one I would buy on it's own merits, I did not include it in the equation. Looking back over his previous subscriptions there has never been a subscription when I have wanted 8 or more of the prints. The other prints are very nice, but usually there are half that don't do much for me. And since even his most popular prints take a few days to sell out, the sub does not make sense for me.

While I don't feel that he has run out of ideas, scaling it back a bit (either in edition number (titling, signing, and numbering 600+ prints each month must take a ton of time), or in number of art prints a year (8 a year? 6 a year?) might allow him to not feel the time crunch of having to get a new print out every month. Also, not sure if the lack of gigposters is his choice or he hasn't been asked, but his sonic youth and andrew bird are really nice prints with low edition numbers and it would be great to see more gigposters.

I will continue to support Dan and be excited each month to see what he puts out. His customer service is top notch and the personal touches, facebook updates, and emails thanking you for your order, are great.

Since I didn't get an answer about why Mark should be mad at Dan I'll try to give my thoughts on your reflections below.
econley wrote:There's a definite link between forsman and McCarthy, one produces more prints than there sould be demand for and the other prouces far less, one sells out when he shouldn't and the other's take awhile to, one's established and draws high dollar amounts for some of his older prints while the other is still in school.
These are not "links" they are counterpoints.

In the little investigating I did I've found P. Buckley Moss and Thomas Kincaid sell out editions of more than 550. Does that make them good? I can tell you I'm not buying that crap. However, it's selling.
econley wrote:You can score a McCarthy on the secondary market for even lower than mark's prints sell for and they're crazy cheap to begin with. McCarthy basically has an open ended print edition that lasts for 1-3 days. It cracks me up when he posts on his site that he thinks they might be sold out. He prints them himself and doesn't list the edition size. As for the economic standpoint of a sub, how many prints a year do you actually really enjoy and would frame? I'm going with 4 as the top answer (the real amount is 2-3), and would only recommend buying from dan if the image is amazing and involes gid ink since people go insane for them even though they're asleep for the majority of the time it's dark out. I'm actually surprised that all of his prints don't invole gid inks since someone always seems to ask if they were used in every release. My true opinion is that LQL should just be re-released so the majority of us will stop paying attention.

I get it, the moon, trees, houses with one light on, powerlines, mountains, and dinosaurs are cool. It just get's old after 6 years worth of them.

And now to go from mildly rational to very unpopular(it's why you love to hate me), Dan's already run out of major ideas and most people are starting to let on that his sub is just a giant scam to own 10 prints that you never would otherwise, so I will predict that in only 3 years he'll be forced to make more concert posters than art prints. His months are numbered unless he finds a new style, maybe it will be animal sketches, who knows
I doubt Dan is trying to mislead anyone with not announcing an edition size. If you're "in the scene", so to speak, you know about where it's going to be. If you're not in the scene you're probably buying just cause you like the art. Flippers don't usually set a trend they follow it. Saying he is "printing to order" is a pretty bold statement and unfounded as far as I know. He's had solo shows in at least three major cities that I can recall. I don't think Mark can say the same (but I do think he has the potential.) So selling out an edition of 550 would really not be too hard. Given he's a one man show it's also not hard to think it takes him a little bit of time to determine if somethings "sold out".

Where are "most people" saying his sub is a giant scam? I'm not seeing it.
I doubt he'll ever need to make concert posters again. However, I predict he will just because I think he loves music.

I don't hate you. I don't even know you.

Well said Marshhouse.

Honestly, I'd contribute to more this debate if I didn't find so much of it to be completely ridiculous. Dan is entitled to run the business side of his artistic enterprise however he sees fit. If people choose sign up for his sub, and due to growing popularity he increases the run of his prints, more power to him. He in no way is obliged to keep his print run low so that your flipping enterprise runs the way you want.

Seeing econley get confused by his own argument, his inability to separate the artistic from the commercial, is like watcing a dog chase it's tail.

And as Marshouse said, I don't hate you , I don't even know you.

I really want to get my hands on this print (Animal Kingdom) but I don't have the $300+ to sign up for the year-long contract. Anyone know where I can buy just this print?
