Bollox.
For the first time in a long time I've not been on EB for a couple of days and this one already came and went. drymounting gutted.
This is a painting I was praying would be turned into a print. From elation at finding out it is going to be a print to guttedness that I missed it in 5 minutes.

I hope they have a 2nd edition that's a screen print with a low run, physically smaller, and half the price.

I strongly disagree.....

Half the size?
Rubbish idea imo! The size is def' part of the appeal.

Screen print? Why? Giclee unquestionably does a better job of capturing the essence of the original. Choe is not a specialist or prolific screen printer (like say McCarthy for example), he's a painter and street artist, so if you want one of his images, surely the ideal is to have either an OG or as close a representation as possible to the OG, not to worry about how it's produced but what it looks like, as it's a secondary product in any case. What's the possible upside of a screen print of something like this?

Half the price?
OK, that part is genius!

It would have been great for collectors if there'd been more of these printed, but as it is, for those lucky 26 (I understand Choe has kept 1 himself) the volume printed just makes these even more special and a steal at $600 imo. I'm glad that he does what's meaningful to him as an artist instead of pandering to an audience or collector base and being a bitch to the balance sheet (in this case only making 27 prints). It helps keep his work authentic and full of energy. Def' one of the most esxciting artists out there at the moment imo. Even though I'm upset not not have got one, I'd rather see something special like this than have the essence of it watered down so that more of us can buy the image - for that there's Obey!

I'm with Stroma and haven on this.
While I wouldn't begrudge the artist 6 bills for an amazing and HUGE piece of art the price and small run put it out of reach for the poor folk like me.
But I'd love to have this. I'll have to make due with a JPG as my PC wallpaper.

Sometimes? Sure. Unquestionably? No way.

I won't buy a giclee anymore unless I've seen it in person, or seen a few things by that printer. And even then, some very reliable printers have let me down with some pretty high-profile giclees. I've seen super-fancy-pants expensive giclees range from "yeah that pretty much looks like the painting" to "well there's a fuzzy jpeg on a fancy piece of paper."

Giclee has its place, but considering what can be done with a screenprint, to say it's "unquestionably" better is either overestimating giclee or underestimating screenprinting.

And for this print, since Choe has a relationship with a pretty damn good screen, who could probably pull this off pretty respectably (though maybe not at 48 x 48 inches), well, we're into it.

ebeans needs an option for "Wanted but will never be able to afford so don't PM me"
That way people like me can torture ourselves looking at the ebay and other sales at prices we can never match. ;)

Interesting points. I haven't seen as many giclees so varying in quality as you have, so I accept your points and won't argue. However, while I realise this is a different printer, OES have done a magnificent job when producing giclees of Choe's work in the past and I've seen other giclees that have blown me away too. I have some on canvas which, as you say they can, look strikingly similar to original paintings, so maybe I'm being naive in thinking that this would probably be the case with this new print too. The best looking reproductions of original paintings I have seen, have all been giclees and 2 of the artists who's works jump out at me to illustrate this point would be Choe and Adam Neate who's 3d pieces one might think cannot be translated to print, but the prints do a damned good job of suggesting otherwise.

So let me ask you or some of the other more knowledgable/experienced people here, in terms of end product what is the potential upside of screen printing a piece like this?
