it is my understanding that in demand artists can set the price their posters are going to be sold for at these events. If Emek knew they were selling them for $140, he shoulda told them he wouldnt do the poster.norbyjake wrote:It's my understanding that these are being sold at Coachella (by the promoters) and not by Emek.rssesq wrote:say what you want about shep but at least Mr. Fairey didnt raise the price of his art some 400% in three years.
$250 ticket for 3 day concert w/McCartney, Cohen, The cure, etch etch etch
$140 for a poster of the event
If memory serves, wasn't the adjusted price last year over $100? Seems to make sense to me - they want to take as much of that $$$ initially as they can. If they don't sell, then drop the price. But if they're $140 a pop then I'd not be willing to buy a stack of 10 or more to flip.
And as you say, sometimes artists CAN set their price. But other times - if you're commissioned to do a piece and then turn over a stack - you have no control over what price is asked for a print. Unless you know/hear from the source, how could you be sure which it is?

Here is the lowdown on Coachella.
Purple/Green edition run of 500 price $125
Sunset edition run of 100 price $225 or $250 depending on what merch table you went to. Some shady things going on at the mech tents but that is a different story.
Sparkle Foil edition Run of 5 price $400: 3 went to Goldenvoice only 2 were sold at the venue to the same person within the first 5 minutes of being open.
As of last night there were about 3/4's of the regular posters still available. I think the sticker shock was driving away the everyday buyer, the only people that seemed to be buying were the people who are collectors. I could not believe the price when I saw it I still can't believe that this poster was more than the 1 day ticket with all of the service fees. Really bad pricing IMO and I think that they will be stuck with a bunch of these at the end of the festival. The fact that it broke the $100 thresh hold made people walk. I guess Goldenvoice did not learn their lesson from All Points West after being stuck with a stack of posters ( that are still for sale at $90 ).
The Sunset edition was almost sold out as of last night and will most likely sell out today. IMO this is the poster to have. It is really Bad Ass in person with super bright vibrant colors. Pretty sure collectors were the ones snapping these up.
I did not get a glance at the foil but got the rundown on it (see above comments)
Over all great poster but WAAAAY overpriced @ $125. Whoever priced these these things was way off on the regular and the foil. I think it was a bit of slap in the face to people who paid $120 to get into the show and then thrown $125 price tag to go home with a poster. They my have curbed the flipping but they also priced out the everyday market. IMO it would have been better to price them at $80 and limit to 2 per person to prevent people from buying stacks at a time. I know that is not bullet proof but if someone wants to go to the merch booth 10 times there is no way to stop that.
