on record attempt
Aidin Vaziri, Chronicle Pop Music Critic

Monday, October 26, 2009

An attempt to top the Guinness world record for largest guitar ensemble, with 3,000 players performing Jimi Hendrix's "Purple Haze" at Sunday's West Fest concert in Golden Gate Park, fell short by about 2,950 participants - and some of those may have been playing ukuleles.
The ragtag guitar ensemble led by Bay Area producer and musician Narada Michael Walden and featuring Hendrix's brother, Leon, kicked off the free event in Speedway Meadow, planned as a 40th anniversary celebration of Woodstock.

It may have been two months late and in the wrong state, but many musicians and fans who remembered or attended the original music festival came out anyway hoping to recapture the spirit of peace and love. If you took a deep breath and squinted hard enough, it really felt like you were having a flashback, and some attendees probably were.

"You are bringing the sexy hippie back," master of ceremonies Liam Mayclem, host of KPIX's "Eye on the Bay," announced as a topless woman twirled around on the lawn in front of the stage.

By midafternoon, thousands of people made it out to hear veterans of the Fillmore and Avalon era of San Francisco such as Barry "The Fish" Melton, Lester Chambers of the Chambers Brothers and Moby Grape's Jim Post unearth their psychedelic rock and electric blues classics. Police declined to estimate the crowd size.

Organized by Boots Hughston, a longtime figure on the Northern California music scene who put together the similar 40th anniversary Summer of Love concert in the same spot just two years ago, the event rolled forward with proudly disheveled spirit.

The portable toilets, located on the opposite end of the field from the main stage, seemed like an afterthought, which prompted some revelers to retreat to the nearby brush to take care of business. The portable sinks ran out of water early in the day, leaving many wandering around with soapy hands.

Merchant booths offered herbs, psychic readings and lots of glassware. The $1 posters of President Obama bearing the slogan "Inhale to the Chief" looked like the day's big sellers.

Meanwhile, younger bohemians walked through the sea of tie-dye and gray ponytails, proffering baked goods and wearing homemade shirts that begged, "Dose me."

"What a glorious morning," said Marin's Lama Palden, part of the procession of counterculture speakers who appeared between musical acts, evoking memories of the Human Be-In at the park in January 1967. "It reminds me of the Gathering of the Tribes."

All the performers and speakers at the nine-hour event seemed intent on drawing parallels between the state of the world now and the way it was 40 years ago, citing recurring war, unemployment and general adversity.

But at the same time, the message of Sunday's anniversary party remained the same now as it was four decades ago: "Power to the people!" said David Hilliard, former chief of staff in the Black Panther Party.

The world record - 1,867 guitarists, by the way - could wait.
