I don't get it, you're a good illustrator, why not try to get some official gigs instead of doing fan art all the time?

I guess there's probably more artistic freedom in fan art than for official releases. But that being said--have you ever considered official art??mcnail wrote:I don't get it, you're a good illustrator, why not try to get some official gigs instead of doing fan art all the time?
Whaddya mean I don't support your system? I go to court when I have to.

I did a poster for Conscious Alliance last fall. I've done some work for The High Sierra Music Festival. I have tried to get poster gigs for WSP and for DSO. I submitted images a few weeks ago to a Bill Bass Pres rep who is in touch with Panic - still no reply.
That said, I should be working harder at self promotion. I intend to approach moe. and some other smaller festies for work next summer. Part of the problem may be my recluctance to do more work for next to nothing. I have a family of four and lots of bills etc...
Another difficulty lies in my contrasting bodies of work. Most of the school year I'm teaching night classes and being Mr. Mom during the day. During Fall, Winter, and Spring I work solely on my fine arts painting and drawing:

I do not get classes during summer months, and have been doing posters & design work to pay bills and see music. Thus I'm only able to create three or four posters a year.
The "fan art" I create does allow me to spend a much longer period of time on a particular poster, and be compensated. However, I should be doing more official gig posters, and intend to phase out the unofficial work.
