I would bet he makes way more money doing these as commissions rather than licensed.

Have there been any licensed Ghibli prints since the Ollys?

Bottleneck released Spirited Away and Nausicaa from Karl Fitzgerald. Pretty sure those were licensed.

I'm assuming BNG and Spoke were all under the "inspired by" art print type blanket - don't think anybody's been able to get the license since Olly and the Stout vinyl. But I'm not the Joe you're looking for so ¯ \_(ツ)_/¯

Have a feeling you’re right. License doesn’t seem to be easy (cheap?) to get.

*shrug* Dealing with licensing restrictions, notes, studio approval, etc. may be a turnoff for some artists. Stuff that seems like a slam-dunk can get derailed by somebody in charge being lukewarm about it
If only laws and regulations didn’t exist. Those always come in the way of slam-dunk easy profit.

Was speaking more to just tastes being a factor. Mondo had that Ghibli piece by Ansin, that never went to print though cuz Miyazaki didn't like it. A slam-dunk in terms of popularity with prospective buyers getting nixed because it's not popular with the brass.

I have no horse in the race (neither an artist nor a licensor), just pointing out it's not crazy that some artists may not want that hassle.

Just wondering: legally if a hammer were thrown (and most of the time it is just a cease and desist) who owns the "mea culpa" the artist or the commission group leader?

If anyone could let me know how to get in on these commissions, I would love to know. I realize the organizers probably have a huge list of people, but maybe leave 15% open for maybe a drawing or raffle.

This kind of messages are normally sent to the party which is selling something.
Also, to add my 50 cents to above discussion, 99% of Ghibli prints sold during last years were not licensed, according to my knowledge.
Also, in a private comission artist normally payed way more money vs gallery, especially if its Mondo/BNG kind a gallery (please note that I love both!)

some pretty active/relevant artists have been blacklisted by license holders due to private commissions
