It's nice to have a print created to honor one of the greatest musicians of all time! From Shepard about his choice to base the illustration on this particular photograph:

"I’d always wanted to make a Kurt Cobain tribute portrait, but I did not want to use one of the many well-known photographs as the reference for my illustration. Fortunately, I ran into Chris Petersen whose late sister Naomi was a photographer for SST Records and shot some great Nirvana photos in 1990. In one photo, I was immediately drawn to Kurt’s gaze directly at the viewer, which I then tried to amplify in my illustration. I hope that my portrait of Kurt is a reminder that his artistry and humanity endure despite his struggles and tragic early death."

Same here. Does anyone have the original photograph that Shep used?

Thanks for sharing the photos. Yeah, I had just posted them as being the likely time period/tour as that sweater collar keeps popping up in '89 and the lower angle shots always look different at that time period compared to post '91 portraits. All of which is to say, I don't think the likeness is off as much as it's probably a more candid, younger portrait before the more comfortable/performative stage. I know I've seen a shot closer to this, but can't find it. Still, have not been able to find the original, only that the photographer died young after a illustrious period with SST and that there is a book on her, ENTER NAOMI by Joe Carducci.
