On one hand: "Only thieves and vandals have made money on Calvin and Hobbes merchandise." -Watterson, Bill (1995). Calvin and Hobbes Tenth Anniversary Book. Andrews and McMeel. p. 12.

On the other hand: "But I want it." -buyers of this print

Is it still technically merchandise if it wasn't sold in a retail outlet?

But it's not really sold if people are pooling money to commission art. If the art already existed, you'd be buying art, but you're paying to create art. You could argue the same for the printer, that you're paying for a service and not merchandise.

Real fans have respect for Wattersons's wishes. Case closed!

The thieving artist and the printer have both profited here (at a minimum) - to say this is not for profit is an insult to the mostly intelligent people on eb.

Watching you morons try and rationalize this fudge is hilarious.

This is a unique example where the artist has specifically gone out of his way to ask people not to be thieving kittens and to respect his vision for the characters, but y'all had to go and be a bunch of kittens anyways.

Yes.

Honestly I wasn't even going to get in the middle of this one, but reading this thread prompted me to read a little more about the man. Having done that, I can say there is no way Mr. Watterson (who is very much alive) would approve of this comission, retail or not. No way.

I doubt this thread will be the end of this, and frankly I believe this will end up putting other future comissions in jeopardy.

Pretty much this, I think.

Do you guys yell at people with calvin and hobbes bumper stickers?
