While chilling with my dog this afternoon, I was pondering Joao's use of canines in his work. I have a doberman and, as sweet and loving as he is, he also has this nervous, ever-alert quality I associate mainly with guard dogs and herding dogs. A dog like that, a "sentinel" dog, wants to be right next to the master, right at (sometimes on) his/her feet, watching over the flock. The presence of that dog's movement, in turn, creates a similar sort of state in the master, When your sentinel dog is at your feet, you never completely lower your guard because your dog is always watching, turning head to look this way and that, getting up to explore some odd noise.

I think Joao often includes these hounds, hunting or sentinel dogs, in his work to convey a sense of the discomfort of vigilance, the inability to completely lower one's guard and relax.

The source of that discomfort is irrelevant; it is the awareness of the unidentified sound, the unscratched itch, that Joao's hounds signify.
