we could eliminate the signature function for all members (or make it a pay privilege like GP does).
also eliminating the ability to link a website into a user profile would make the site less attractive to spammers/bots.
Personally, I have no idea what to do other than making the sign-up process more "complicated" to hinder bots from signing up in the first place. But it seems like there are also actual people whose job it is to spam message bords like we see it repeatedly each day now.

Maybe you can establish a waiting period between sign-up and first post where any mod has to manually unlock posting for a new member? Don't know how feasible that is.

For someone who visits the site 10-15 times a day, the 5-10 spam threads are pretty annoying... (not criticism to the great works you mods do!).

Cheers :pint:

I'm curious to see the latest head count (if still being counted since 40,000). Seems like a lot of 13ers out there....

guess it would make sense to put this here instead of the Random Posts & Chaos thread. Original post is from August '13

I haven't really had time to really dig into it but threw together some charts that show the steady rise in new members since '03. Things really took off in 2010 though. The by month chart highlights spikes in new membership which seem to be something that gets debated quite often around here- "EB went to fudge when collectors of xyz showed up." For the record I think they are all wrong and this place is great and has evolved well with the times.

Anyway just thought this would be interesting to look at (especially for mods and older members). EB is on pace to add just under 10k members this year which would be the first year since '05 that the number of new members is less than the prior year*.

I've bought stuff from a number of people who've been on EB since before my time and never posted, not even once.

...all excellent transactions too :2thumb:

nevermind I can at least update annual stuff...

In total 13,680 members have posted at least 1 time in the forums, that's about 1 in 4. 9,545 members have 2 or more posts.

more interesting than this would be yearly numbers for new art added the database, items listed FS/FT using the EB tools, ebay auctions added, ect. I can't imagine any of this is easy to pull but if someone can give me a data dump I can try to do the rest

no idea how accurate any of this statistical data is. some of the original programing that created it may be offline.
