Hey,

I hope all are well and healthy. It’s been awhile, so I thought it was time for an update. Over the last year or so, we’ve added several new Team Members: crimson99, Browntrout, descendo, ghornett, and whisperingid. Thank you for joining The Team and your help is greatly appreciated. We are always looking for new Team Members. So, if you have any interest please reach out to one of Administrators on the site.

On the technical side, we also are making progress with the site. The Tech Team and, particularly, papaver, are doing an excellent job keeping the site running and providing much needed and greatly appreciated tweaks to the site. Again, a huge improvement compared to the recent past. My thanks to them. With that said, we are in need of Tech Team volunteers. So, if you have a technical aptitude and an interest in helping Expressobeans.com, please reach out to one of the Tech Team members.

I sent tax information off to the CPA a couple of weeks ago. Thus, I thought our Members would be interested in Expressobeans.com’s financials. Here’s our break-down for Year 2020:

Income/Revenue: $21,807.60

Expenses:

PayPal Fees: $258.66

LLC Renewal: $50.00

Advertising: $292.56

CPA Fees: $400.00

Truck Rental: $179.69

Grids for Art Show: $1373.27

Server Fees: $5463.85

Domain Fees: $90.85

Bank Fees: $180.00

E-Mail Fees: $179.40

As you can see, we are slowly moving past the break-even point, which is a dramatic improvement when compared to the last 7 or 8 years.

Regarding the future of Expressobeans.com, I feel as though we are much stronger than we were just two short years ago. At some point, we need to circle back to the long awaited upgrade. The upgrade has been discussed by the Board-of-Directors a few times, but most are still “gun shy” due to the last upgrade debacle, which is completely understandable. Plus, it would be prudent for us to continue to build up funds before we take that step. Hopefully, it will happen sooner rather than later, but when and how it will happen is uncertain at this point. I spoke with Marty, president of TRPS, the other day. As of right now, TRPS in San Francisco is still up-in-the-air for this year. My understanding is a decision regarding the viability of TRPS in 2021, will be made sometime in early August of this year. If it does happen, Expressobeans.com will, likely, be there to support TRPS and pass out free tubes, again. Also, we are not having an Atlanta Rock Poster Show this year, but we have remained in contact with Sweetwater Brewery, who remain very interested in hosting/supporting the show. Hopefully, ARPS will happen in 2022. Plus, I’d like to think the 51 art grids I’ve been storing in my garage will eventually be put to good use, again – ha.

That’s all I have for now. Members, thank you for sticking with us. Your support and belief in Expressobeans.com is what makes this place so unique and special.

Take care,

wha

Amazing, thank you for posting the full financials.

Any chance we could see the income split by donations/ebay commissions?

2020 income was ~80% eBay and ~20% donations. A few other stats below, these coming from google analytics:

-March 2021 users were up +55% from March 2020. Usage had been dropping each of the last few years and appears to have bottomed out in 2019
-81% of sessions are from the US, 5% UK and 4% Canada. NYC drives the most traffic followed by Chicago, LA, Austin, and London in that order
-57% of sessions are mobile, 43% desktop

Kinda surprised (not really) how little the site makes. I'll buy it for 22k!

4% Canada.
Sounds about right. My posts are probably about that from the daily total.

Thanks for the update. Make EB great again!

Now that I am (probably) done posting for the day, it’s likely way more than 4%, lol.

HOW DO YOU GET FORUM ACTIVITY BACK? I stopped donating after I asked this question and it went unanswered previously. I did become more active in the database and adding ebay listings when I have time though.

I wonder how much the bottom at 2019 was impacted by the site being down.

Thanks theperfecttree for the breakdown on the income, that's pretty eye opening. 18k ain't shabby for passive income. Considering 2020 followed the lowest traffic year, I can only imagine what the income was in years past with higher traffic (and more donations).

Back in Expressobeans.com's "heyday" I think gross income was about 5 or 6 thousand per month. From the tax returns I've reviewed, that amount started to drop off significantly around 2014 and continued to decline, unfortunately.

That's the $64,000.00 question. The easy answer is to roll back the calendar 15 years before social media when Expressobeans.com was the only player on the block. Times have changed and it appears much of the discussion has moved to social media outlets.

So, do you have any ideas of "how to get forum activity back"?

I'm not sure I would call it "passive" income. Hundreds of man/woman hours are put into this site every year by both the Team and our Members.

Thanks for the update whalaw.

The way the site was neglected for so long led to a mass exodus to Facebook...it'll be hard to get folk back, which is a great shame. The amount of information stored in the forum is valuable, some of the art discussion threads for older prints are a very interesting read. It's not easy to search for historic information/discussion in the Facebook groups.

Do you have any stats for forum engagement? It does feel busier than it was a year ago. Perhaps in time, folk will return.

Create a actual market place like discogs. It would generate revenue and bring in more traffic.
I have brought this up in the past and the response seemed rather generic.
