hendrix played a flying V during part of his isle of wight set which this poster commemorates.
he owned at least two of them, the first one was a regular flying V which he painted
in a similar style to the strat he painted and played at the saville theater
and the strat he painted then burned and shattered at monterey. in fact gibson had discontinued the flying V,
and it was at least partly because hendrix used the guitar that they started producing them again.
this second flying V here was made specifically for him and given to him by gibson
it was a custom made left handed design with gold plated hardware
actually if you watch the DVD, while he waits to play behind the amps
one of his crew shows him the guitar, and he tells the guy something along the lines of
that guitar was supposed to stay in his room; he hadn't really wanted to bring it outdoors in the elements
but it's there and he does use it. you can see him setting the tone knobs live.
he plays it on "red house". you can look it up on youtube.
