So I was going through my box of random photo gear and grabbed my Panasonic LX2 to see if the batteries were junk or not. I charged one up, dusted the camera off and took a few shots yesterday. The LX2 came out in 2006. It's a 10 MP point & shoot that has full manual controls & shoots RAW + JPEGs. This is the point & shoot that got me to kick my DSLR addiction 6 years ago. You can grab one off eBay for under $99. It's not always about the gear. #simplify. #ConcealedCarry

Nice! Having only shot with Nikon DSLRs does the 4/3 sensor change anything about how you approach a scene to photograph?

the one MAJOR difference is that I almost always have a camera on me. I just wouldn't carry around a DSLR everywhere I go, especially with a zoom lens. It's heavy and looks expensive. You look like a tourist or an easy target (or both). I like to duck into ally ways and shoot graffiti or grab QUICK shots of people on the street. The smaller format and lack of a prism make the camera less conspicuous and looks 'less' professional. It's easy to flick on, snap a couple shots and tuck back into my messenger bag. Point & shoot cameras were ubiquitous before everyone had a smart phone. Most folks just see a small camera and think, 'snapshot'. I feel more comfortable using it anywhere.

m4/3 is half the size of a full frame sensor, so all the lenses have a 2x magnification. My 45mm 1.8 pictured above equals a 90mm on a full frame. You also end up with a shallower depth of field (edit: actually, it's the opposite. This always confuses me), so photographers & videographers who dig bokeh gravitate to this format. I guess the other thing that changed for me was a conscious decision to switch from zooms to prime lenses. I did so for two reasons, size & speed. While there are some very compact zooms, they sacrifice f stop. I use my camera for editorial photography at work sometimes, and I prefer not to use flash. In combination with higher ISO and image stabilization, I can shoot hand held in all but the darkest indoor situation. While they can be quite handy, zooms also add an aspect of tinkering with your composition. "Should I zoom in?" SNAP "How 'bout zoom out?" SNAP "Hmm, in between?" SNAP.... IMO, you just end up being more decisive with a prime. I turn the camera on and look at the framing. It's either yes or no.

With my 2 working bodies right now, I have a 16MP and a 20MP sensor. My Panasonic GM1 (pictured below) is the 16MP and it's the one I've been tucking into my messenger bag and occasionally taking into concerts. I regularly make prints 15"x20" from my shots, even if I need to crop for composition's sake. I've made some prints quite a bit larger, always using the scaling feature in the print driver, and they look fine. I plan on doing some architectural work with the new body and printing 24"x30" or even larger (maybe 30"x40"). ***and to contradict some of what I just wrote, I picked up an Olympus 40-150mm 2.8 zoom with a 1.4x teleconverter to work with. Again, correcting for sensor size, that's an 80-300mm (or 112-420mm with the 1.4x tele). This is photography with finished, marketable prints as the end product, so the process is more deliberate.

***I ditch the zoom lens on this right away. In fact, I only shoot with Olympus lenses on the Panasonic bodies. These two manufactures teamed up to launch the m43 format and their lenses will work on each others cameras ...but not so for Sony & Fuji.

In very simple & basic terms, this link explains different sensors in comparison to each other:

Wow, thanks for the lesson the information is much appreciated. I never thought of the size aspect. That is something I will take into account. Haven’t had a proper camera for a few years and was thinking about getting one soon.

Im using a GM1 as well and a dated GH3. I'll probably be dropping the GH3 for a A7Siii when that comes out and selling off my 4/3 lenses, as I'd like to move up to a full frame system. I really like the GM1 though so I'll be holding onto that and probably one prime lens.

wow. it seems like more and more, in the court of public opinion these days, you are guilty until proven guilty and then fired and/or beaten up.

My pup enjoying the water... kind of reminds me of Snoopy dancing.
