I don't mind a site or radio station asking for money to help stay afloat or make necessary changes, but it's all about how they ask.

Yeah, the 'you use this, and you use it for free, so drymounting pay us five bucks or, y'know, feel bad' tactic is pretty fudge. I get that what wikipedia does is useful, but not so much that I ever felt I need to throw $5 at them.
