He explained his process as follows on FB:
it was not based on a full color painting. It was created first by hand, in black and white, then colored, one layer at a time in Photoshop. The color layers were digitally painted like watercolor, with a mix of opaques and transparents, painting positively, and negatively.
These are the original hand painted blacks:
Compare it to screen image and it's pretty damn close. The sheer terror is still there. Nice work!
