I would suggest making it so you need to have made 10 posts before being allowed to make topics. Hopefully cutting down on your daily job of topic removal :clap:

WTF this crap is becoming a daily thing every morning. These forums are like my daily paper and I don't want this crap on there. Please do something to remedy it as I'm getting tired of scrolling through all the watch this episode of this or did you miss that episode of that.

You guys are going to need to act on the spam sooner rather than later. You've got a couple of months until they spread and every section gets spammed into oblivion :)

As a peruser of the forum it really doesn't bother me - my eye barely glances at those threads and they are gone as quickly as they appear. (Unless dummies post in the spam thread to be funny... :hanging: ) But I wonder about the long-term security of the site as I see these attacks more and more often... :?

I don't think the PHPBB software is that elaborate to allow for such a thing, but it is a good idea. I used to run a smaller forum, and those spammers could get past almost anything.

shame indeed, the spammers aren't really hitting the site hard at the moment hence me trying to push for measures to be put in place before it becomes a serious mess. The spammers could flood the forum offline with its current setup of allowing quick accounts and instant topic access. Just about flying under the radar enough at the moment :)

I run a phpbb board for a 4x4 forum and have got it so no spam hits the boards at all.

It involves a combination of things. Better CAPTCHA, spambot questions on the registration form (later phpbb installs have this built in), moderation addon, creation of a new user group with, in our case, first 3 posts/topics going to moderation before being manually approved by mod/admin team.

If I can help at all with the board let me know, happy to have found the place and the massive wealth of info it contains.

Edit: Just seen examples of the type of spam you're getting. Moderating the first few posts for new users would totally sort that out. Was relatively easy to set up as theres now a new users category included in phpBB. Automatically switches the users to a standard user group after they've fulfilled the allotted number of moderated posts. Makes a bit more work for mods but no more than the spam posts they're having to delete anyway. The bonus is the spam doesn't get through to the board though.

I also installed the Moderator Needed mod for phpBB which lets mods know when theres a post awaiting review in the mcp.

I say make it so all members have to pay $5 donations to EB before making their first post. Not only would this deter spammers but some other members that seem to have 10+ user names.

EDIT:::
Actually make it $10 for a lifetime membership! No reason not to help support EB and $10 for life is not that much at all!!
