You should break ground on the 'Framed Ashley Wood' thread because I'll bet some degenerate already used 'Framed Wood'
I think I'll take you up on that idea.....
viewtopic.php?f=31&t=85247 SIDE NOTE: Thanks guys, I am very pleased with the print and frame-up.

In October, with my bud Jeremy Geddes we will be doing a joint show the Jonathan LeVine Gallery, the actual dates escape me. I guess im kinda excited about it, the first time I have a exhibited a singular vision, a collection etc..
Just wanted to say, was thinking about it this morning...

I don't want to stir too much crap up in the Geddes thread, so I'll just open the door here.
I'm not a fan of Wood's work as much as I am Geddes' work, but I respect both artists as observers and interpreters, although their creative processes and destinations and far different. With that said, what brings the greater Wood followers here to like his work?
Please enlighten me.

the quick flip.
but, for me, its the colors and the war material. I also enjoy the rawness to the paintings. I have the first There, it's a litho and it's great.

While Geddes is a master at realism, Wood is a master at minimalism. With a few strokes of the brush, he is able to convey so much detail. He really understands lighting as well and what he can achieve with his style is outstanding.
And robots and naked girls too.
Plus his comics are awesome. Popbot, WWR, ZvR. Good stuffs.

Even his prints have the most unbelievable texture to them... God I love that!

For me personally its an interesting niche that he's filling as an artist that is actively releasing prints/originals. Most of his releases are based on the stories and characters that he created. Additionally I get a weird "raw" feeling each time I see one of his pieces - like he's saying "eff you if you don't like this" or "I don't give a eff if you like it or not, pussy" I guess is how I'd explain it. (for example: the giant empty space in the most recent print Lady Sham Stroll or certain aspects of After the War or Domestic Scene

)
Plus his originals are affordable despite the "must purchase without thinking" nature of the drops. Hopefully he releases preview images in the future!!!!!!!!
I'd say they both Geddes and Wood have an "ominous" nature about their work that attracts me. The same ominous nature that attracts me to prints like Keyes' Last Kiss for example...just different levels of that "feeling"...I like art that is a bit weird and/or makes people wonder "whaaaaaaaaaaaa?"
basically skill + subject matter attracted me... someone PM or lambaste me if I'm thinking incorrectly about all this.

x43x covered all the bases but I will add that for me Ash and Jem are two sides of the same coin. Both styles dazzle me with amazing imagery - one constructed out of very detailed and refined brush strokes while the other is more visceral and just plain raw.

So Geddes is the sushi right? Delicate, refined, slow and meticulous in craft & design, washed down with a nice red.
Meanwhile, Wood is a big bloody steak, sizzling and spitting fat flames on the grill, rough and crispy on the outside, (pink in the middle...ooeer!) and wolfed down with a beer!

Another thing to add for comparison's sake...
Since Geddes paints in such detail, the "what" is already taken away from the viewer. It's easy to tell that there is a girl floating above her bed while a window shatters, or a cosmo is eating cement. The real questions with Geddes are "why and how?"
With Ash, many of the pieces ask the viewer "what?" since many aren't based on realistic things. Take Birth for example. I still can't really wrap myself around "what" is actually going on in that piece. Ash's style lends heavily to the "what" question, as sometimes they are abstract enough that the viewer needs to fill in some blanks to understand the intent of the piece.
