i'm trying to catch up on the Mondo thread

There is your problem.

if you are looking at the thread title from "view new posts" or some other listing view, there is a little page to the right of the title. Hovering over it should show "view first unread post". If you click on that it takes you to the first unread post in a thread. if there is no little page, you are caught up with that thread.
