You just make sure you paid with paypal (NOT GIFT) and you've got 45 days to get your money back if it all goes south.
The high high majority of sales and trades that go on around here are totally legit but you should always protect yourself in the event of a donkey kick.

Edit: and since I can't read you were asking specifically about trades, not sales. In the case of trades I would let a member establish some good feedback and a bit of a reputation around here before I traded anything with 'em. It's not a guarantee but it's safer than trading away your Stout Lebowski to some ass monkey who's been here for three days.

Good question...one I don't have an answer for, but often wondered about.

The only way I can think of is having a trusted intermediary party.

Indeed. I was recently wondering about that. I have yet to do a direct 'trade' for prints. I was concerned if I actually found a trade for Akira as to how I would protect myself.

Is there anyway to do it with both parties protected?

Send to someone you both trust, and then that person sends to each person...

I'm glad everything worked out for you.

I recently went through a similar ordeal buying a fairly expensive print from a member that seemed to be held in high regard by other EBers I trust. I wound up having to resort to a PayPal claim that took 2 months to get the issue resolved by finally getting a refund.

When dealing with an unknown member - have them send you a feedback request PRIOR to sending the cash.

That way - if the transaction goes south you have an open slate for 2 weeks to record the event.

I might start doing this with newbs......

This is a really good idea. It still doesn't save you since it's very easy to just drop a username and make a fresh one but it may help. No matter what, you're always taking a risk. Look what happen with our German friend. No one would have ever thought he would screw anyone over since he had been part of the community for so long. But obviously, giving up his EB family was worth the money I guess. So...you can't be sure. I've reframed from buying a very expensive print through EB before just because I didn't see the sellers username often. I know a lot people here have been members here for a long time but aren't active members. That's fine but I'm more reluctant to send one of those people money just because I feel like they'd probably have less to lose if they tried drymounting me over than an active member would.

And yes, it's unfortunate that you have to send a threatening email in order to get a response from a seller. That would piss me off.

I have a similar situation too. I sent the money through paypal 3 weeks ago. After that, I didn't get any responses or any tracking number or any print since then.
Today. I sent him a email to give him one more week before i file a claim on paypal.

If i need to file a claim on paypal, it is such a pain to wait so long to get the money back.
Imagine if someone tried to buy a very expensive print and got scammed, he can't get those money back for at least 1-2 months - like someone said in this thread.
That guy may miss some good deals along the way since he can't get those money back in a short time and spend it again.
Money keep dropping its value if it doesn't flow.

I paid someone here $200 for a print and they haven't answered my PMs requesting photos or a shipping confirmation for about four days and it's starting to make me nervous (there are wide photos on Google; I requested photos of the corners and paper/ink texture).

I'm not about to file a claim with PayPal and I'm also very new to this process. When I shop at eBay, the sellers usually answer my e-mails every couple of days. Is it commonplace here to pretty much trust who you're buying from because the community is so tight-knit? I'm probably making a big deal out of the seller being busy for longer than I'd like, but who knows.
