Cheap flat file?

Seems like a great price but what about shipping costs? They can't be $3.99. And no reviews on any of the companies models make me kinda unsure as well. I think craigslist is the best bet like others have mentioned. No high shipping costs as these usually are heavy.

I'm starting to think it's not the actual flat file unit but just a stand.

It says:

Closed base for 40-3/4x28-3/8x6-in. files. Color: Light Gray.

I think the actual title is deceptive. I guess I'm better off doing Craigslist if I can find one on there...

Yeah feedback would be nice, I have room for that. Price wise and size....

But in the end isn't a portfolio more convenient?

A portfolio is more convenient but not as safe in my opinion. First you have to stuff all your prints into the sleeves which can be very risky, and then you have to make sure you put the portfolio in a place where people won't accidentally bump into it.

Counterpoint. As long as you are careful you should have no problems getting prints in/out without damaging them. Also, you can easily view things (all you gotta do is flip some pages). Slide it under your couch and no one will bump into it.

Make the investment and buy a good stable flat file. I'm always amazed about how everyone talks about the value of their prints or how much they mean to them but don't want to put the money into protecting them (proper storage, archival framing). If it's about the money, take a break from buying more prints until you have a place to store the ones you already have.

Just be patient and keep searching on craigslist, it took me a while but I found a pretty awesome one for $50. It's big and sturdy as hell and now I don't worry about my prints getting damaged.

Yeah my Safco is way heavier than 14lbs. Granted it's a larger flat file but something about that just doesn't seem right.
Maybe get in touch with the manufacturer and ask some questions?

Yeah, I just checked that out while reading the thread. When in doubt, google the part numbers from the Amazon description. Doing that takes you here...

Google part numbers, always. Just like my protip from a few weeks back that if you're looking for a rare, out-of-print, or expensive book, google the ISBN...you never know what you'll find.

I don't know if flat files are in high demand or what, but here in Austin, they are marked up like 500%. If I look in other cities, they are going for ~$150 to $300, but if I want one here, I'm looking at paying at least $550. I've been hitting up the sellers for lower prices. Maybe they are desperate to clear the floor space.

they come up quite often in my area on craigslist, 100-300 bucks. I really have NO place to put one until we get a new house so I have not pulled the trigger yet.

Picked this up off of Craigslist for $200. 2x5 drawer 53"x42" Safco with the base. Retail in town was around $2700 for this exact setup. Just got it set up tonight and couldn't be more pleased with the result.

I was really impressed with the overall quality of this thing too. Built like a tank. Kinda made it a bitch to move (but I did take out the drawers and all) but either way, it's in its resting spot in the basement so I won't have to worry about moving it for a long time. The guy I bought it from used it for storing large format art prints too but he was in the process of moving across the country and didn't want to bring it all with him. His loss, my big gain.
