There wasn't even a handful of people online this morning when it was taking 30 seconds or more to pull up the text box to submit a reply to this thread.Codeblue wrote:It's probably related to there being 100 or so people on here all the time now. The site wasn't really designed for such an intense amount of traffic.

Okay, so I can give specific times. I tried to get to the Forum index around 6:50 AM Eastern Standard Time (Detroit) and kept getting timed out.
I tried until 7:00 AM and finally the page loaded. These were the folks logged in at 7:00 AM
I tried to reload it again to see if it would load and was not able to get the index to reload again until 7:30 AM. These were the folks logged in at 7:30 AM
It took another 15 minutes to load the index again. These were the folks logged in at 7:45 AM
I'll continue in the next post.

I mean, by 7:45 AM it was down to three users, no guests and at that point it still took 20 minutes to get the Forum index page to load again, but only the raw HTML appeared to load and it said there were 10 people online.
At 8:15 I finally got the index to load one more time.
At 8:20-ish, it started working normally again.
So, for about an hour and a half, EB was returning timeout after timeout. I don't have a clue as to what the problem might be (maybe it's the goddamn search bots, Apache is out of process space, maybe there is a memory leak in phpBB that consumes all memory until nothing works and stuff has to be restarted...I don't know).
I offer this information to the mods in hope that it will help them figure out what is causing this. It happens just about every morning and twice in the last week it's caused downtime when the load on the system appears to be minimal.

And as of this post, there are 34 users online and everything seems to be working just fine. Weird.
In total there are 34 users online :: 16 registered, 5 hidden and 13 guests (based on users active over the past 5 minutes)

even though it shows I was on at the time, I kept getting timed out and was unable to get through at that time. I guess there was some connection but I was never able to view any pages.dirkstainly wrote:I mean, by 7:45 AM it was down to three users, no guests and at that point it still took 20 minutes to get the Forum index page to load again, but only the raw HTML appeared to load and it said there were 10 people online.

EB was under an attack by a foreign hacker. This hacker was stealing bandwidth and CPU usage which slowed the site down. I counter hacked his hacks, found the source and reported him to the provider he was using to control things. I removed his hacks and instituted a security backup to prevent the same hack from happening again. The security hole was in software EB uses, not software EB wrote and at no time was the user able to gain control to anything critical or any user information.
Truthfully, EB is under attack 24/7 without exaggeration and has been for many years. It is just a fact of life that there are people with no ethics.

Good question....hirschy75 wrote: Seriously tho why would someone want to hack EB?
There are a few reasons and none of them have to do with posters.
1) EB runs on a computer, free computing power, esp useful to the poor folks of the world without such resources.
2) EB is an american computer which can pass USA security tests, useful for covert activities such as foreigners gain access to things they should not.
3) EB is someone else's machine, useful disguising your true identity when doing something you dont want others to know.
4) EB is an internet server, useful as a many to many proxy of content (bandwidth is not free anywhere), think games and porn.
5) Politics, to make a statement, 3rd world countries will take over a site to make a point. Actually happened once when Bush was president.
Sad but true. On the internet anyone can tell where you come from. The ONLY way to hide it is to use someone else's machine. But this poor sap picked on the wrong machine because I am smarter than he is with probably 15 more years of exp. This person just copied someone else's hack.
