If you go to discuss remotely, it gives you (I added spaces so it wouldn't actually create the link):

[ url=http://expressobeans.com/public/detail. ... 502/288379][ img]http://expressobeans.com/remote/1711:288379.jpg[/img ][/url ]

replace "remote/1711:" with "visual/IS.php?id=" and delete the ".jpg"

like so:

[ url=http://expressobeans.com/public/detail. ... 502/288379][ img]http://expressobeans.com/visual/IS.php?id=288379[/img ][/url ]

so you get:

The easiest way, instead of trying to remember the format, is just right click on the image on the "Display Remotely" page, and do Copy Image Location to get the url that you swap in for the img tag.
So it goes...

Is there not a way to globally change the text that shows up in the discuss remotely link?

Not anything that mods would have the ability to do, since that would be a change to the actual php code. Maybe an 1nkling type, with admin access, but even then they may have limited abilities to do something like that.
So it goes...

Not a site-wide fix, but:
Here's a Chrome extension that people might find useful goo.gl/S15jDm. It checks forum images and swaps the faulty "/remote/xxx:xxx.jpg" sources for working "/visual/IS.php?id=xxx" ones. It also does this for links on the "Image Remoting" / "Discuss Remotely" pages.
