I have a Kiera Knightley cardboard standee from the first Pirates of the Caribbean keeping my storage facility safe from Pirates.
I'd be down to trade for something.

Nice thread, I am in the original movie poster business, over 20 years experience so if anyone has any questions, feel free to let me know, I will help as much as I can. There are some other good dealers out there, but also some dishonest sellers out there too. Also, not every image out there is an actual one-sheet, some are bus shelters, some are fan-made, and some are simply digital online poster images, and not actual posters you see in theaters.

Is there a database/website that lists official releases with sizes, material, single sided or double sided ?treegate wrote:Nice thread, I am in the original movie poster business, over 20 years experience so if anyone has any questions, feel free to let me know, I will help as much as I can. A long response, but hopefully informative....ChefFerrari wrote: Is there a database/website that lists official releases with sizes, material, single sided or double sided ? Really want a Mad Max Fury Road on vellum/plastic
The IMPAwards.com site is good, the one problem is they tend to post everything including images that aren't actual one-sheets. As you know, technically the original studio-issued one-sheets aren't made for public sale, only theatrical distribution which is what makes them quite rare and hard to find. eBay is generally flooded with not only originals but knockoffs as well, and in most cases the eBay stuff is nothing more than someone who works at a theater or knows someone who does and they know nothing about posters or even packaging a poster up. There are some good dealers on eBay though but wading through all the junk on eBay to find a legit authentic one can be frustrating.
The majority of one sheets are printed on paper, sometimes a studio will print something up on a higher grade paper, for example the final style for the first Pirates of the Caribbean film was done on a very nice thicker matte style paper, almost parchment like and it was beautifully done. Quantum of Solace had a final style poster that was printed on a nice thick paper as well, but the majority of the same poster were done on your typical poster paper.
Nearly everything nowadays is double-sided, but double-sided fakes do exist. Less than 10 years ago the majority of the double-sided originals went through a change design-wise, whereas before the back side of a double-sided poster was the same image as the front and the color consistency was the same on either side, that changed to nowdays (and most titles since about 2007 or so) have the same image on back, but the back side is a lighter shade than the front, as if almost faded just a bit. Also some posters get the special UV-coated treatment, an example is some of the Iron Man teaser advance had a glossy finish on the front, the teaser advance for Casino Royale, and another example the advance teaser for Wolverine had a glossy UV wet-look on all the black areas that made up the imagery of Wolverine, the rest of the poster was standard paper, but the black on it was UV-glossy. Only the advance teaser had that done, the final style, which had the same imagery used but added the credits, didn't have this glossy look to it.
Nearly all of the one sheets, if not all, nowadays are 27x40 inches, in some case, it may be slighter smaller or bigger than 40". For example the authentic Dark Knight Joker "Why So Serious?" teaser posters came in at 40 1/16th of an inch (or as some say 40.1 inches). But reprints do come in 27x40 inches too which makes it even more confusing for collectors. Studio do generally make single-sided originals too, those are for the most part easier to find than double-sided, and generally made for convention giveaways, advance screenings, etc.
Some posters are much harder to get than others. Disney titles, especially the Marvel Studios posters starting a few years ago with the final style for the first Avengers film are very hard for dealers and most others to get. The ones you see on eBay, again, are generally ones taken from theaters and slapped up on eBay.
Regarding Mad Max: Fury Road, I believe there is only one official style out there, and that would be the domestic advance teaser. There should also be a final style coming out closer to the film's release, possibly around the end of March. Some studios also produce international styles, and at times, depending on the studio, international styles would feature different artwork than the one-sheets you see in theaters in the USA. International and domestic one-sheets measure the same (27x40) and are in English, but with some international styles having different artwork, and the fact that some can be insanely difficult to get, there is generally a lot of collectors looking for them. Also at times, there are IMAX exclusive styles, re-release styles, etc.
Inception had two domestic styles released, but then there was also an IMAX exclusive style that is extremely rare. Warner Brothers is known to produce international versions of posters that collectors only dream of getting. The Dark Knight had some really nice international styles, the Prestige had a really nice international style, The Fountain, and other WB films had posters that collectors would love to get their hands on.
There may be some bus shelter styles for Mad Max produced, in some case some studios will use the same artwork as the one-sheet poster on the bus shelter, and even still, on an international style, in some cases just changing some wording. The Avengers final style domestic said "May 5th" at the bottom, whereas the international one-sheet featured the same exact artwork as the domestic but said "In Cinemas Soon" at the bottom. I don't know of any plastic Mad Max posters, sometimes we see studios produce those 3D Lenticular style posters but there isn't one for Mad Max to my knowledge.
Any other questions you have, don't hesitate to ask away either here or private message me.

If a fan of movie posters then be sure to take a look at the Japanese chirashi style posters - they are very small (B5), mass produced items that are given away pretty much as flyers but can be on reasonably thick paper - the images can look brilliant and you can get them extremely cheaply - even for classic movies like Jaws and Alien were the prints are 30+ years old (so even relatively rare ones can be had for less than $20 and many are less than $5 - though some super rare ones can run into pretty big money).

I'd echo what Fitz has said. Chirashis are great looking posters, easier to frame and generally very affordable.
Generally speaking us one sheets tend to be portrait. Uk quads are horizontal. You don't really get any cross over in terms of format layout. The only one i can think of is kill bill. Where they made a uk one sheet teaser. Which was for the uk premier
Most modern day us and U.K. poster fit a standard layout dependant on the films genre. If you like posters for their artwork rather than the film title. Check out some polish, czech and Japanese poster. They tend to be much more colourful and striking design
