I have two feelings about this. The first is Showtime is drymounting stupid. How could they let things get this far without negotiations being complete and contracts being signed? Perhaps, much like with this announcement today, Lynch just took matters into his own hands with announcing it. Either way, to start this without being prepared to go all the way with a notably eccentric filmmaker, is just enraging and sad.
My other feeling is, was Lynch being reasonable? This guy hasn't directed anything substantial in a decade. Is he even competent enough to handle the job anymore? I can't imagine the show needing a budget that Showtime couldn't spring for, unless Lynch is just making ridiculous demands.
Either way I don't see myself keeping Showtime if they can't fix this.
