"the delicate brush strokes of Elias Garcia Martinez have been buried under a haphazard splattering of paint.
The once-dignified portrait now resembles a crayon sketch of a very hairy monkey in an ill-fitting tunic"

i cant even tell you how much i love this
Pic of how the restoration should have looked. Ironic, as the grandaughter of the original painter had only just donated money to have it professionally restored.
The old dear must have crept in during the night to do it, otherwise surely someone would have stopped her. God bless her enthusiasm. I love the way she managed to paint the bottom of the scroll the wrong way round. Escher would be proud of that.

Apparently what the 3 pics above actually show are how the painting looked in 2010, then how it looked after the old woman started scraping the old paint off as part of her restoration, then how her finished 'piece' looked.

Borja is a pretty backwater town, this doesn't surprise me.
