Shill bidding (topic's not about ninersfan)
I was just browsing thru eBay and occassionally saw bidders with 0 feedback but they were created years or months ago, some just recently, and have bidded on an item multiple times. Can you suspect that that bidder is shilling?
Here's a few examples

It could happen, but it is not clear to me that there is anything wrong there.
For example, deadash_1997 in the first listing made many attempts to just to beat the bid of klowners (autotbidding) and he never was able to beat the bid.
Shill bidders will not win an auction because that will inccur eBay fees.

Well deadash_1997 could've just shilled up the price without intentionally trying to outbid a real bidder since there is no guarantee another or the same bidder will outbid his shilled bid. Maybe he shilled just enough to get it close to a price he wants without outbidding the first bidder(klowners)sunsetbrew wrote:It could happen, but it is not clear to me that there is anything wrong there.

Here's another example from the same seller

A bidder has 0 feedback and has been registered for 5 years
and mono_666 shilling is shill bidding

personally yes, I find it odd when a user comes out of the woodwork after a number of years just to bid on a particular item
one way to investigate this is to get a program that shows bidder history. that way if you see a pattern you can make a more informed decision
all of that said, I think accusing sellers and buyers of shilling is a pretty serious accusation and shouldn't be done lightly
just my 2

It is not clear to me either. It does happen though. Use your gut instinct...and only pay what your willing to pay. Using the price history here helps as long as there is a big enough sampling to eliminate any wide diviations from the average.
Auction tampering is a federal offense BTW.

personally I see nothing really wrong with shilling. Nobody makes me pay more than I want to for an item. While it is always nicer to get something for less if I buy something its because I want it and am willing to pay the price I paid for it.
Remind me of your userid so I can shill up my auctions when youre bidding.dbldragon wrote:personally I see nothing really wrong with shilling. Nobody makes me pay more than I want to for an item. Also so that I can remember not to bid on your auctions.

Having had my account suspended by ebay for shill bidding I no longer do it. I used shill bids on occasion to get the price to where I would want it if I used a reserve price. I never bid at the end of an auction trying to get more money from a buyer. If ebay lowered their fees for reserve bids and such there would be much less abuse. I was only trying to avoid paying ebay any more than I had too. I guess a billion or two dollars is not enough for them. That being what it is as I said only pay way you think an item is worth to you and don't go crying if you paid too much. No one made you do it.
