There may be a thread for this already. Sorry if there is one but I couldn't find it.

My question is...
If a poster is supposed to be an edition of 200 and I get a print that is not numbered and it is clearly not a bootleg, where did it come from? Can't be part of the 200 edition right? Possibly a unmarked artist proof?

Well going on how other artists work, this may have been a run of 200 where the band got possibly 150 or less, and the artist kept the remaining. The artist's copies will be signed and numbered, or just signed. The limited part means that only 200 were made in the run (total).

Sometimes the printer is shady and runs extras without the artist's permission. Happened with some of the old Hess posters.

Sometimes people just don't number their stuff, but disclose how many were produced. I just got some posters from Pedini, and they clearly state edition sizes online, but aren't numbered. Most artists are honest, shouldn't be a big deal.

Check the back, esp. around the bottom. often you'll find the artists/ firms mark or stamp/signature down there.

it happens.

i've got an arik roeper sunn/boris print from the S/N run, but mine is only signed not S/N. I got it at the show and I know for a fact that others sold at the show were both signed and numbered. I think he just forgot when he was editioning them. Gotta be a PITA to sign and number that many prints and mistakes happen.

You all need to fill out a TPS report on these.

Besides morsht you could ask any number of phishposter collectors and see what their opinion is on unnumbered prints... and the ethics thereof...

Which Tara print and where was it purchased?

Gig poster or art print?

How can you tell it's not a bootleg?
