I guess so. There's tons of artists I don't personally care for, but I 1000% understand why people are drawn to them. Basquiat I just can't wrap my head around. Granted, I don't know a ton of his backstory or anything, but from the images I've seen it's a head-scratcher.

The amount of time and perceived effort on a piece art is not aggregate to the value of said art.
Watch this video. It's an interview with Bowie and Julian Scannable about the film Basquiat and they talk alot about
Its a long interview but give it about 4-5 minutes and they talk about cultural and monetary value of art and how its perceived and controlled.
Start at 25:00 and it goes to about 31:09
Highly recommend the video.

his art wouldn't sell for anything near what it does without his association with AW

Not trying to start a fight, but I would rather be narrow minded than so broad minded that I could mistake a creative third grader's mixed media project as priceless neo-expressionism.
That said, creativity and uniqueness are important in artistry.

You gotta give the man props. Drops 9 figures on a piece of art and says he going to loan it out to galleries so it can be seen by many. Dude!

I love it when people compare Basquiat's work to that of any random third grader.
I just do.
Oh - and if anybody out there knows any third grader who is actively creating art that is coming from their own head, and not copying it from something else, that is anywhere as brilliant and interesting as Basquiat's work, then I'd really like to contact their parent(s). Please message me ASAP, because I have some money that can go towards that kid's college fund.

That's what you do when you don't want to pay to insure it yourself. Put the responsibility on someone else.
But yeah... bad ass to let the public have the chance to see it.
