Visiting Austin for work this week, and was wondering what galleries/studios/shops you all would recommend hitting up. Mondo and Poster Cabaret are Austin based, any others that would be fun to check out? And would you recommend braving the lines at Franklin...yes or no?

Thanks and cheers,
SW

If you've never done Franklin, and like BBQ, do it. Mondo isn't actually showing anything right now, so the gallery will be closed. Poster Cabaret is only open on the weekends. But if you're around then, go check it out. Go stroll down South Congress; there's a lot of good shops to check out (e.g. Uncommon Objects, Lucy in Disguise, etc). Go check out the Castlehill Graffiti park/Hope Gallery off of 10th street.
So it goes...

If you like margaritas go to Curra's and try their avocado marg. It's delicious.

Have some beers at Easy Tiger, and try to not leave there madly craving artisanal bread.
So it goes...

Franklin is definitely worth the wait.

Would reccomend Valentina's, Franklin, LA BBQ, and Style Switch before salt lick.

Via 313 Pizza

Cool!

1) Is there a method to the Franklin madness? Obviously go, line-up, wait, eat. But is there a way to maximize the enjoyment and minimize the pain? I'm hitting up a conference so my time is more limited than desirable.

2) Will def hit Poster Cabaret on the weekend! But are there more local gallery/shop options at which to pick up a few prints? I naively assumed there'd be a lot since Austin seems like hallowed ground for the print world.

Thanks all!

Also, Parts and Labour just moved further down on South Congress next to Big Top. They carry a ton of screen prints from Texas-based artists.

I second Via 313.

Jester King
Torchy's Tacos
Go to Lockhart for Barbecue, don't waste precious time at Franklins when you can get tasty barbecue outside of town in less time.
La Barbecue
Bonhomie - bonhomieaustin.com a friends new resturaunt.
Austin Books & Comics
Guzu Gallery
Parts & Labour
Mondo Gallery(if open)
Alamo Drafthouse

Go see a show - Moody Theater is great, but don't go see a band there just to experience the venue will be plenty of good shows going on.

You just got to get there early. I had a random day once where I had to drive someone to the airport at 5:30. Then I just went straight to Franklin and was there at 6am and was 2nd. They open at 11am. I would say you have to arrive minimum 3 hours before then to 100% guarantee you get food. Bring beer and a chair. That will mitigate your time there. It's worth it.
