The Rory Kurtz Thread
well said^EgoDeath wrote:Believing, buying in to, and being a part of hype is a choice.
But generally speaking hype - is not a choice, it is simply a form of promotion. Posting on social media, wether it successfully drives interest or not - is still an attempt generating some sort of hype. Hype is an element devised to push sales and create interest. Sneakers, streetwear, and a ton of galleries wouldn't be nearly as successful as they are without it.
I don't think commission groups are the ones to blame here about "getting off" on the hype that it is created. That is a component of why they exist in the first place, to create something special intended for a select group of people... the issue, to me, is the behavior of the artist who is working with group. Posting the finished piece is fine and expected, but teasing process shots and edging your Kult members then dismissing their concern as "marketing 101" is cringe city.

A bit silly to do an Alien print with likeness when Mondo has the license, no?
I don't care either way. Rory's done some nice work... but nothing I'd hang. Hype comes and goes. Used to be Durieux, and now that ship (which, I understand, is a mode of transportation) has sailed, it's Kurtz. Whoever the spring chicken is that will be waiting in the wings will be next - odds are it's Matt Woodson (by odds, I mean, literally just a cursory glance at whatever the FB hounds are howling about, and not, well... I don't know). Anyhow... the same rule that applies to toilet paper applies to prints - buy the one that you like, that makes you feel good, and that makes you happy, whether it's cheap as chips or expensive as all fudge, its your butt and we've all got our own ways of dealing with the hurt.

I like Kurtz, but there’s a few I’ve passed on just because I didn’t like it

The Aliens tease got taken down from IG...luls
Rory is a talented dude, period. I think this hobby is most fun when an artist is up-and-coming, or just getting really hot (Graduate --> ACWO --> Drive). Once "zomg' status is achieved, a multi-factorial blend of hype/crazy fans/artist ego/etc. seem to suck the fun out of it.
