Has a private commission group produced anything great?

I Half agree on the commissions comment, some are blah and some are pretty cool. That can kinda be said about anything though so in the end I enjoy commissioned work and own a bunch.

I tried to keep it less dramatic, buuuuuuuut:SPAC04 wrote:Private commission groups certainly seem to deliver great EB threads and dramatic financial disputes.

(long story short, if you are in or are considering joining a Lineo Commission, just don't)
Also, just tried to search for TGT drama, search function didn't bring back anything, and I don't pay enough attention consistently to know what it's all about.

Some of the commissions are getting licensed and have big names for the art

What exactly makes something a private commission anyway?
something not released through a gallery or proper channels. that is based off of someone else's intellectual property.

Does the point of release have any determination as to it being official or not?35mmpaul wrote:something not released through a gallery or proper channels. that is based off of someone else's intellectual property.
Really just seems about who is fronting the money to the artist to make some art.
Take for example that Groundhogs Day print that's on the front page today... "private commission". If a gallery had released it, what would have been the difference?
I don't completely understand this sentence.o4phish20o wrote:Does the point of release have any determination as to it being official or not?
Official would be anything that is approved by the rights holders who made it.
This is just people who create commission groups on here or facebook and don't have any affiliation with companies to create a print.

I believe the "Official" status is determined by whether or not the print is actually licensed and approved of by the holder of the IP.o4phish20o wrote:Does the point of release have any determination as to it being official or not?35mmpaul wrote:something not released through a gallery or proper channels. that is based off of someone else's intellectual property.
Edit: sorry. I see 35mm also said this but I misread it.
Double edit: That Groundhogs Day print sure is.....special.

I only bring this up because of the post above my original...35mmpaul wrote:I don't completely understand this sentence.o4phish20o wrote:Does the point of release have any determination as to it being official or not?

That's just it..any random person can pay for licensing rights and an artist to create for them. Doesn't require a company or business to do so. Which is where I'm seeing the lines blurred. A gallery is just one big commission group; sometimes holding more/better licenses to use, which draws bigger name artist to pool from.Woo5lscott wrote:Some of the commissions are getting licensed and have big names for the art
Just seems like a private group can produce a quality studio official release now, that the public never gets a chance to buy.
To me, the only work that is NOT a private commission, is released via the IP holder.
