Mondo Poster News & Rumors
Eh, even at the time I didn't think it deserved the flack it got, mostly because I think it leaned into its campiness and anime-ness instead of trying to be a proper "racing" movie. I mean...there's a kid and a monkey involved in the proceedings. You just enjoy the insanity or you don't.

Speed racer has always been one if those guilty pleasure favs of mine.

Admittedly, all this seemingly newfound love for it has got me at least moderately interested in checking it out again, if only to see what all the fuss is about. I saw it in the theater in 08 and have no memory whatsoever of it, save for thinking it was fine, while also fully understanding why audiences ignored it.
In general, though, I'm kinda opposed to this practice of a vocal group of twitter film writers trying to out-praise each other in their attempts to turn cinematic lemons into sweet, sweet lemonade.

yeah. its just a fun vivid bright action movie based of a kids anime.
the only bit that is kind of annoying is when the kid interrupts the movie at the end to warn about cooties or whatever.
its very successful in the world it wants to play in.
the visuals are a blast and the soundtrack is equal to it.
its a sugar rush of movie. and it might come off saccharin to those who dont want to go with its energy.

That's very fair. I'd offer that the practice is a modern-day extension of the cult film phenomenon though - films not appreciated at the time getting hyped up through underground screenings or word of mouth to garner larger followings further down the road in a film's lifetime. But in the age of social media there's probably too much lemon squeezing and sugar pouring that you're probably left with a burning sensation and ants everywhere.matowest wrote: In general, though, I'm kinda opposed to this practice of a vocal group of twitter film writers try to out-praise each other in their attempts to turn cinematic lemons into sweet, sweet lemonade.
I don't actually love the film - its brand of ridiculousness is enjoyable - but it's definitely not the worst thing the Wachowskis made...

Perhaps I just haven't been paying that much attention, so last week when the 10th anniversary thinkpieces started dropping, I was taken aback by the "this week, we love ____" aspect of it all.jkw3000 wrote:That's very fair. I'll check it out. But I feel like this is one of those situations where everyone is trying to convince themselves that Space Jam is an awesome movie.
