I was recently at a vintage poster gallery in Boston (http://www.internationalposter.com) that had an amazing amount of vintage advertising posters, many of them at a very large scale. They all were mounted onto a linen backing though which struck me as odd. I asked one of the staff about the process and was told that it is an archival wet mount which is reversible but required to keep the prints from tearing or being damaged due to their size. I imagine that the reversal needs to be professionally done but the whole thing was new to me. Anyone hear of this process?

Yes. More information can be found here:

Found the site on Google when I was researching the use of acid free linen tape to mount prints.

from what i understand, in terms of things like old movie posters, it increases value if it's linen backed. that's currently not the case for concert posters though.
