A D.I.Y. frame Project for my Converge/Horkey
I'm in the process right now of making a frame for this...
http://www.expressobeans.com/public/detail.php/54117
...and a Buddy of mine told me I oughtta put it up in here.
Well here ya go this is what I have done so far & I'll update it as I make progress.
Day One(10 hours inc. Cutting material for another special frame project.)
The Material is Poplar straight from Lowes about 25 bucks worth
Have a Plan.
Damn a winter full of NOT cleanin up after myself
Ready to Rock.
Rough cut the pieces to length
Nice Clean Cut
4 of the side pieces & 4 of the top & bottom
Cutting down 4 of the pieces for glue up
FULL glue coverage is needed!!
Good to see excess glue while clamping them up
Clampage!
The profile of the glue up
Using the Joiner on the Inside edge
Cutting the biscuit slots
The angle for the profile has been Cut as well as the slots for the biscuits
Glue up for the outter frame
Poster + 3" Mat + 4 1/2" Frame = HUGE!
Day one DONE.
Day Two(10 to 12 hrs.)
I spent a good deal of time this A.M. figuring out what I wanted to do design wise on the frame. A good time waster till it gets warm enough to get back out into my shop.
Anywho then..
Time for some sanding to smooth out the saw cuts from a rather extreme cut for my saw.
A clean, tight Joint...smooth as a Babys ass from sanding down to 220.
Back inside to transfer my design to the wood
Then it's Back out to the Shop for some time with a router.
It's good to get most of the fields cleared before the chisel carving begins. Once done with this, Time to lay off for the day.
Day Three(was 15 hrs. of Carving)
The Chisel work starts today...Slow work so I'll just post Highlights through this part of the process.
Cutting the excese material away from the Cherry Blossoms
Removing Material & shaping the scrollwork
Before and after carving around the Osprey Logo
Well That's it up to yesterday for now.
I'm working hard to get this finished promptly as I have a lot of other things I should be doing instead of this...But I just gotta get this pup up!
Everyday I work on it I'll post the last days work, the next morning.
(But I'm travelin' with the Infamous Stringdusters on their Illinois leg so I'll be absent during the weekend)

I'm confused how we got from the blocky pieces above to the shaped pieces below. Also, are you glueing the two pieces together to make the rabbit that the glass, matt, print & backing will drop into? Why not use the router to make this? Is it a matter of proper depth/thickness?Tapecat wrote:

I forgot to take pictures of the Saw passes. Opps. It took two passes for each piece because my saw blade just wasn't big enough. You can make out the angle on the blade, on the pic of the Cut/Mortised boards.I'm confused how we got from the blocky pieces above to the shaped pieces below.
Yep gluing the second piece of wood is due specifically to get more depth of material to carve. If I didn't take that extra step the edge of the frame would been to thin and looked like fudge!
If you look at the plan pic, at the bottom of the paper you can see why.
This is going to be a two part frame I'm working the Outer piece now. Also, are you gluing the two pieces together to make the rabbit that the glass, matt, print & backing will drop into?
(which will be Flat Black & Gloss Black) The other inner frame will be gold leafed and there are many reasons why you don't see that yet. But stay tuned it'll be coming up
Oh and THANKS everyone for your comments I appreciate it!
awesome! can't wait to see it when it is finished.
make sure the burlesque crew sees it, i am sure they will be delighted.
