If your dad has a wood shop, I think it's a slam dunk to go the 'wood' route. As for the type, I'd leave that up to what your father has in the shop. I personally do not think you can go wrong with wood. Wood has great character and can exhibit its own personality. For me, having something handmade and especially something that you perhaps can create with your father or family resonates with me. Every time you see it or open it, I think it can bring you back to the times you experienced when it was crafted.

You could make an argument for metal as you can fabricate it, but wood can bring warmth to a room and metal cannot. That said, I have a metal flat file but that's due to a lack of wood making skills and a father that has a wood shop. :-)
