$1000, because CL is full of lowballing buttholes.

If someone from here wants it, shoot me a message.

That thing is gorgeous if I was in Texas I'd buy it. Don't even want to know what it'd cost to ship to me.....sigh.

Thanks for showing how you did this Billy-I'm going to follow your instructions to do mine that I just bought. One question though, about how long would you guess the whole process took even though you broke it up over several days? Is it something that could be done in 1 day if needed?

The wife and I just made over this nasty ass flat file in about a weekend. I'm really happy with it. The stain is much darker in person (couldn't get a good picture).

about to pick-up a big ol wood flat file for $150 to convert to a coffee table with my dad. As much as I want a new metal one the wood is gonna look classy as hell. Since most of the pics here are gone, i'm gonna use the text as a reference and then good old fashioned intuition and carpentry skills.

If there's anything special I should know about insulating, locks and anything else to keep outside forces from entering, that would be great

Thanks and wish me luck!

I am putting this here because I think that this thread is the most authoritative on the process, even though many of the photos have since gone. I recently finished a flat-file-to-coffee-table project. Much of my inspiration was taken from here, but there was a twist on mine I think is worth sharing. I needed to have some kind of base for it, and opted for a sheet of steel. The only kind I could readily get hold of was much thicker than I wanted. But that allowed me to recess the casters farther from the edge and not connect them to the flat file at all. The steel is connected to the bottom of the cabinet with a bunch of rivets. The whole thing came out great if I do say so myself.

Just purchased my first flat file for 25 bucks and am hoping to fix it up. Ideally I'd like to cut into the bottom and put drawers for packing supplies and bags to flatten my prints and refinish the flat file with a piece of plexiglass on top. Any ideas/suggestions/recommendations are much appreciated and I will be looking to this thread for some guidance.

The wood base it's on is birch if that helps any.

BenRichards - you might be able to modify that birch carcass to accommodate drawers. See my plywood flat file at the link below. In order to open up the bottom for drawers, it may be necessary to add 1 x 2 wood rails to support the heavy metal file above. A biscuit joiner is a handy power tool for plywood box projects, aiding alignment and achieving strong joints.

Oh man, I love the glass top build! I'm going to have to start looking for a flat file with this build in mind! Thanks for sharing.

At some point over the last 8 months, I deleted all my old images from FLICKR. I've gotten a few PMs from people asking for a 'how-to' guide with images again.

Since I've recently started another project, I've decided to document my progress/process here:

As I progress, I'll be adding more images.
