Appreciate the kind words.
I had a slate grey Mayline file and I just spray painted it black without sanding it down. I didn't even prime it. The paint looks great.
For these current files, though, they were sanded and primed before painting. The main reason for this was to remove rust.
They're being painted with a spray rig. Rather than doing these with spray paint, I wanted them to look better and not spotty. Due to this, I ordered automotive paint. Luckily, I'm fortunate to know great people that are willing to lend a helping hand. I'm not performing the actual painting, a crew is.piratesprayer wrote:ya? are you in a pro shop painting these?summoner wrote:Are you using an airless sprayer in the metal files?
I've done it both ways.jdhq1185 wrote:Man, this is inspiring. Would you recommend sanding down paint on a metal flat file even if the current paint is still in good condition?

Went out last night to put another coat on the file to try to deepen the stain a bit.
Still need to stain the inside of the shell, seal it, add the hardware and then lay the glass. Aiming to have this one done by Sunday.

For the best results, always sand the finish at least a little. If the paint is all good and no dents, just hit it with 600 grit lightly, it's not a much about removing paint as it is prepping a good surface for adhesion. Your paint will last much longer and lay more even if you do this.jdhq1185 wrote:Man, this is inspiring. (I've painted all kinda of things and have a few body shop friends and they know their stuff.)
EDIT: awesome work billy and keep the pictures coming, you have some great ideas.
