I've used the document cleaning pad mentioned here on 3 different prints (Stout 'Spaced', Moss 'Mononoke', and Stout 'Inglourious Basterds') on pure black ink areas and it's worked like a drymounting charm, never leaving anything like that. I really don't know if I'm just doing it differently or just extremely lucky?!?

Nope. Actually had several people offer to take a look at it for me, but at the same time had a buyer make a good offer for it with me making most of my money back, so I sold it instead of fixing it.
