Madison Square Garden gig poster advice

Talk tunes. Post lifetime is 1 year.

Postby RupertPupkin on Mon Oct 02, 2017 6:14 pm

Very excited to be visiting New York for the first time in a couple of weeks.
The icing on the cake is that we have tickets for QOTSA at MSG and obviously I'm keen to pick up the poster for the show.
Can anyone give me any tips? Like where are they likely to be on sale, and will I have to arrive particularly early to score one?
All help gratefully received!

MSG is a little different from other venues in that they sell an allotment of prints at a Merch stand outside the gates before show time. So, theoretically, one can purchase a print and return to a hotel room with the print before scanning into the show. Nice way to avoid dealing with a tube. The flipside is that if the print is really desirable, any flipper or their minion can buy them with no ticket needed. So, if it's a hot print, plan on lining up early and having to wait. The 7th Avenue entrance is where this merch stand is btw. Prints usually go onsale at like 4 or 5pm... and for a hot print, people line up at maybe noon.

I don't know how other bands split their merch, but with Phish, it was also possible to score a print inside the show. Again, if a hot print, you just have to hustle straight to the inside merch stands in the 100's or 200's. May be setup different for other bands but I feel like it was the same for Pearl Jam. I forget.

Also, MSG has metal detectors (like the airport) at the security checkpoint. Plan accordingly. You have to pass through the metal detectors to get to the merch stand.

Finally, word on the streets is that the Spicy Chicken Sandwich for sale at section 119 is to die for. I can neither confirm nor deny this.

Enjoy!! NYC is an awesome place.

The spicy chicken is not all that
what is key at msg is the food is half price first hour the doors are open

Prints can be attained inside
did it every day ...
You just have to be first in the gate
many fplks dont like going in early

Thanks for all the detailed info! Much appreciated.
Think I might be buying this one on the secondary market - don't think my wife's going to be up for rocking up at MSG 3 or 4 hours before the gig!

I live 2 subway stops from MSG and I don't even go 3/4 hours early for any gig.

I’ve never bothered going for a print at all of the shows I’ve ever attended there. Stay out and enjoy the whole scene as long as you can before you go in.... it’s such an amazing scene and atmosphere. Don’t waste it in line for a poster! Hell, buy it online if it turns out you really must have it.

I think for the GNR shows that finished last night, they had a stall outside for anyone to purchase providing you had a wristband.
(Not sure when they handed those out). One per person outside the venue.

Inside I believe you could buy a few prints.

Wrist bands are typically handed out an hour before the exterior sale

Depending on the show
folks could have started lining up at 11 am ie phish

Half price was only for phish E?
Pretty cool of them

Jojo, didn't you post pics of you stealing an Obama poster when you went out to eat one night? Maybe that was even sushi...
