Old School & Underground Hip Hop discussion thread...

Talk tunes. Post lifetime is 1 year.

Postby kassdnb on Fri Dec 07, 2012 1:53 am

I don't think I've seen any hip hop discussion in the Music thread, and wasn't sure why.

And I am not talking about rap or mainstream "hip hop," like Lil Wayne, 50 Cent, Kanye, Drake, Pitbull, or any other commercial trash.

Here's a modest list of some of the rappers, crews, and producers I like:

Aesop Rock, Blackstar, Blue * Exile, Brother Ali, DJ Shadow, Fashawn, Guru, Heiroglyphics, Invisible Skratch Pickles, J-Live, Living Legends, Looptroop, Mac Lethal, Madlib, MF Doom, Murs, Non-Prophets, Prefuse 73, Q-bert, Quasimoto, Run DMC, Souls of Mischief, The Cool Kids, The Pharcyde, Typical Cats, Wu-Tang, etc., etc., etc., and on and on and on.

So if you know of any album releases, tour dates, in-stores, rap/dj/breakdance battles, graffiti news, AND ANY PRINT RELEASES spit that -ish here yo!!!

Dear anybody, please do a badass print of Rian Johnson's Brick. If necessary, I'll buy them all.

Think I've heard the name Childish Gambino before, but not Hoodie Allen... word!

Have to check those out for sure!

Sage Francis, People Under Stairs, Sole and Eyedea and Abilities are at the top of my list. Seen Sage 7 or 8 times, never gets old. Seen PUTS probably 4 or 5 times.. .

Got to see Sole 6 or 7 years ago.. . caught E&A around then as well.

I'm a big fan of Themselves and pretty much anything Doseone and Jel do, Alias is also near the top of my list. Freestyle Fellowship was great back in the day and Latryx's 1997 The Album was one of the first 'real' hip hop albums I got into. Liked some of the Def Jux stuff from the 2000's as well like RJD2 and El-p. :pint:

When I'm done ranting about elite power that rules the planet under a totalitarian government that uses the media to keep people stupid, my throat gets parched. That's why I drink Orange Drink. - BH

Sage Francis, Hell yea! Last time I saw him was in 09 at Rock the Bells in Chicago w/ B. Dolan, and got to meet Murs that day too.

I like Eyedea a lot too, especially in his early battle rap days when he was waisting people and won that MTV battle rap contest. But then when his 'By the Throat' album came out you could just tell something wasn't right. They still haven't said what he od'ed on, but when they do that you know it's heroin.

I once got to hang out backstage with Mr Lif, Hangar 18 and Aesop Rock at 9:30 Club in DC. It wasn't as cool as I wanted it to be.

Lyrics Born and Lateef!!!

Man, that was my album back in the summer of 99!!! And actually (I think) the first album that opened my eyes to underground hip hop and showed me that guys other than the B-Boys could rap! Can't believe I forgot about that one...

Lyrics has been somewhat active, but I doubt he'll do anything that will top that album!

Good Stuff Krame, thanks!!!

Seen and met Murs too. He changed though, after he signed his major deal
with Warner Bro's back in 06.

Yeah, Eyedea had sick flows during his battle days, it's too bad the path he ended up
taking.. . the underground community still mourns!
