Looking for some advice on Rainier. Not planning a climb or anything......
The lady and I will be in Portland at the end of Oct (this is my biggest issue).
We want to drive up to Rainier NP, have a small hike (<7 miles), and set up camp.
Only the one night as the following day were heading into Seattle.

As I said, timing is our issue. I don't know what to expect out there. Im fully prepared for anything the Eastern US can deliver in the backcountry...but Ive never been out west, much less in the depths of fall.
I don't want this to be bad for the fiancé. Backpacking is fine as she could use the miles to warm up for the Inca Trail next spring.

So, what should I do? Is this plausible? Please recommend any trips you have in mind! Any advice is appreciated.

Not too familiar with Rainier but it looks like a nice area. Up in the mountains so I imagine it could be chilly up there by end of Oct. I would be prepared for rain. Yes, bring lots of rain gear. It never stops raining in Washington.

I had a good time hiking up cucamonga peak recently. There's a decent wildernes campground up there if you have trouble with 12+ miles in one day though. There is also a nice fresh water spring 5 miles up the trail if you need water but the view of the IE at the top is incomparable to anything in socal. There's snow now but it is still a fantastic hike.

I'd be interested in this too. Have so much gear and always seem to be buying more. Kinda like art.

Anybody here done kilimanjaro? My brother in law is heading over there next month and he's pretty determined to make it to the summit.
