Any where I can just buy this thing already built and ready?hunterjax wrote:Raspberry Pi + Retroarcade = $30 and 30 minutes of set up, all these games, plus everything on NES, ColecoVision, Ataria and whatever else you can find ROMs for.
Plus, it's a fun project to build with your kids if you have them.
Amazon even sells a $20 NES classic "case" that you can house the RaspPi in.
Can we get a Video Game subforum?

was 127/140 and snagged a SNES Classic this morning.
It is definitely more than a $30 investment:
-Raspberry Pi v3
-Case
-Power cord (preferably one with an on/off switch)
-Micro SD card
-Controller(s) (preferably Bluetooth)
...and then some setup time. If it is your first time, it can be a bit confusing on what you need, where to go, how to setup controllers, etc. This is worse than paying for the stuff.
Once setup... it is awesome! Plus, you can add Kodi and have unlimited TV shows and movies for my favorite price (*free*).

Main ISOs: Stout "Pulp Fiction" & anything Phlegm
I had an SD card laying around (a bunch actually); I'm using old PS3 usb controllers.mobius006 wrote:retro pi + SD card + controller... its not a simple 30 buck thing.

wait for a case/cables/sd card and Pi package to go on sale on Amazon; can be had for under $50.agr719 wrote:Yeah, the Pi 3 is $35 on its own.

hahahahaha!
Seriously, though, I am not a tech guru at all and it was pretty simple and cheap, I just had a lot of the stuff laying around I guess. HDMI cables, controllers, sd cards, and a case from an older Pi that I used for a coding app for the kids that they grew out of (a KANO - that's more expensive but also great for kids if you have them)

I full laughed at my desk at: "CHILD'S PLAY!" and "IF YOU WANT TO MISS THE drymounting POINT!"mobius006 wrote:
EDIT: and BTW, I totally wanted an NES Classic and couldn't find one, didn't want to pay Ebay prices, so decided to do this . . . it was a reasonable alternative and was a lot of fun to do with the kids, especially going through 1000s of ROMs to pick out obscure 80s/90s games.

Totally agree! However, some just want to plug in a HDMI and a power cable.hunterjax wrote:I full laughed at my desk at: "CHILD'S PLAY!" and "IF YOU WANT TO MISS THE drymounting POINT!"mobius006 wrote:

probably on Ebay, but it probably would cost the same as the SNES does retail.alteridiom wrote:Any where I can just buy this thing already built and ready?hunterjax wrote:Raspberry Pi + Retroarcade = $30 and 30 minutes of set up, all these games, plus everything on NES, ColecoVision, Ataria and whatever else you can find ROMs for.

I’m not knocking it. I was dead-set on making one after I was one of the Wal-Mart preorder casualties when they “accidentally” put up their first run of SNES classics. So I kept trying to figure out the best SD card, case, controllers, etc., and then managed to get an SNES from Target (which I’m still waiting on). Put it on hold for now, but it’s definitely still something I want to do in the future!
That article was great, too
