are you still under a lease? They should at least have to eat any rent price difference if they are forcing you to move from one apartment to another.

My lease ends at the end of February. Every unit is being forced to move to a newly renovated unit and all rates are increasing. We do get half off the first month's rent to help with the move, but I'll probably spend way more than that on moving supplies, set up fees, and whatnot. Not to mention having to change my address on everything (seriously, who has the time for that? )

Trying to be a good sport about it all, but after seeing the quality of the apartments after the renovation I was super bummed out. I know it's silly to be bummed out about a stupid apartment and it's easy to simply say 'move elsewhere' but after being in Houston for a dozen plus years now, I've finally warmed up to it and I can actually say that I like being here. I like my neighborhood and I like my apartment. I even like my job (wtf).

The gentrification thing sucks. There's a #KeepHoustonHood movement and as silly as it might sound, I'd prefer high crime and low rent over being priced out of my neighborhood. I'm one of the long time residents that is willing to pay to stay. A lot of my neighbors can't afford it and are trying to figure out where to go. I understand that times change and I know I've had it good at the price point I've been at. I'm even willing to put up with the inconvenience of having to take time off work (burn valuable PTO) and move all this fudge to the other apartment (on my 10 year wedding anniversary no less). The thing that kills me though is how they're taking these perfectly good apartment units and destroying them with these hastily constructed, poorly designed, tacky ass 'upgrades.' When I snuck into a newly renovated unit to take measurements the other day, it was like seeing a good friend with all his limbs chopped off.

The high top bar counter that my wife eats breakfast at every day? Gone. The cabinets above the sink that hold all my pint glasses? Gone. Replaced with a shitty light linked to the same switch as the kitchen light so the only option for lighting in the kitchen is BRIGHT AS drymount. The subtle light that used to be above the stove that I currently keep on 24/7? Replaced with a microwave. We ditched our microwave years ago because we don't use them. I don't get down like that. The beautiful built in storage and long hang bar in the closet? Chopped in half to make way for the *option* to rent an overpriced washer dryer combo. Umm thanks, but I think I need the space in my closet for my clothes! That big spacious countertop? Chopped and lowered so much that my flat file can no longer occupy the space it dwells in. It will have to be moved across the room and I'll have to ditch my guest couch and the antique coffee table that I like so much. The big ass mirror in the bathroom? Replaced with some rinky dink mirror with a big black frame from Kirkland's or something. The colors are all darker and the place feels smaller, even without anything in it! I could go on and on, but I'll stop...

I know I probably sound like a loon, and in the scheme of things these are annoyances and inconveniences, but man I hate dealing with this kind of dumb drymount corporate buffoonery. Just another group trying to make a buck, not giving a drymount; taking a perfectly good property and shitting all over it. The manager is really working with me to the best of her ability, but she can only do so much. She can tell that I'm bummed out. She even told me in a low-key friendly tone that I might want to look elsewhere. I'm just not willing to give up being in walking distance of my office. When Claudia needs the truck, I can walk to work. In the event that it breaks down or something, I'm good. Having worked across town at the print shop and having to make super long drives in Houston traffic everyday (and shell out for gas constantly), I have zero urge to move to a cheaper apartment in the suburbs or go outside of the Houston city limit. I feel like the old man in Up.

I'm going back to trying to be positive, weighing my options, and hopefully making the best decisions possible. I know this is the pet peeves thread, but thanks for putting up with my negativity :pint:

When we rented in a complex in West University back in 2009, we had this whole 'aesthetic upgrade' effort occur as well. A frame around the bathroom mirror was added. Table tops were refinished. Window frames upgraded. The constant letters requesting permission to enter, having to square away valuables during the exercise and general interruptions drove us to go and purchase and be done with landlords, once again. We thought we were done with it 10 years prior when we purchased in Melbourne and had got used to it. Coming over here initially for a short term stint meant we thought it made sense to rent. That feeling of true lack of privacy and having to get permission to make any altercations make one feel like a student or living with parents. Couldn't hack it anymore.

Sign a minimum period lease and do some research on other nearby older apartments.

Keep in touch with the other displaced residents in case one of them finds a suitable alternative.

Stay sane! :pint:

Not really. RA has his work/life balance down. I need me some of that.

Not actually sure if it is a peeve or and anti-peeve. Will leave it here.

Came back home on Thursday from a couple of weeks of vacation. Just below -20 outside, nothing special. Opened the door to the house and it seemed chilly. Asked the wife if she lowered the temperature on the thermostat before we left and she said yes, to 18C if she remembered correctly. drymount me if it was 18 degrees in here. So I took my shoes off and went into the living room, looked at the thermometer and it was 0.5 degrees Celsius above zero inside the drymounting house. Checked the thermostat - set to 21C. What the drymount? Went to the basement and furnace was not turning on. Drove the wife with the kids to the hotel near by and went back to the house. Took the thermostat off and installed the old one - no dice. 0.0C in the house now. Called the emergency whatever service and was told they would be here within 24 hours. Luls, I said. I know drymount all about furnaces (and thermostats, for that matter). Before heading to the store to pick up a few electric heaters, I figured I should run the water to let the coldest stuff out and let the new warmer water feel in the pipes. All taps ran fine until I got to the kitchen. There it started out ok for about 10 seconds and then stopped. That was disappointing to say the least. Luckily, about 20-30 seconds later it pushed the accumulated ice through and I saw water again. Thank you, Jebus!

When I was done with that and was at the door to head out to the store, the phone rang and it was the dude from the emergency whatever service saying he is on the way and would be here in 10-15 minutes. About 25 minutes later the dude showed up at the door and went straight to the furnace. 5 minutes later it was working. He said all he did was reset it. He then cleaned the valves and the heat sensor, which weren't dirty to begin with; tested this and that and said everything looked fine. At the end he said if it was his furnace, he would let it be and see what happens type of thing. I said, alright, drymount it, lets do that and asked how much I owed him. Nothing he said. How so I asked. He said, well, everyone in Alberta, apparently, is paying a few cents on every gas bill they get (I should find my last bill and check it out), which pay for this very service. He said they don't really fix fudge, but do the diagnostics and clean it up when fudge stops working. Great, I am happy with that. Didn't really need another few hundred dollars to pay on the night. #socialismatwork

While away, we were seriously debating to extend the stay for another week to ten days. The wife was a little pissed at me for saying it was not a good idea at the end of the day. Who is da man now  Seriously though, had we came back a day later and we would be completely drymounted. The pipes would freeze just a few hours later that night and that would not be fun at all.

Everything seems fine now, or for now. Aside from the fact that half of the house plants are drymounting dead from the cold.

Reader's Digest version, eh:
"I went away on vacation, boiler turned off, I came home and ran some water, dude came over an hour later and turned the boiler back on for free. No damage. The End?"
