The BEST session bassist in rock & roll history. Thankfully, he died in his sleep. If it's your time to go, that's the way to go for sure!geezer wrote:http://apnews.myway.com//article/201205 ... N6S82.html Donald "Duck" Dunn passed at 70 in Tokyo.

Yup. That dude was a heavy hitter. Listen to those old Otis Redding tunes and you'll hear it. RIP.

My grandfather died in his sleep, much to the dismay of his screaming passengers.freaksmeout wrote:geezer wrote:

I need more. Nothing seems to satisfy. I don't want it. I just need it. To feel, to breathe, to know I'm alive. - MJK

So glad I made a point of checking him out both this and last year - if even only for the day.
This video was made a year or two after the first time I'd attended the festival he'd created in honor of his son Merle.
Mutherfukin Legend - fastest flatpick in The East.
Black Mountain, just east of Asheville.

Amazing man, no doubt. I like how he kicks it up to double time at about the 3 minute mark. Doc musta' been about 69 yrs. old back when this was filmed.freaksmeout wrote:Thanks for posting that video. Awesome.
This year, I did notice he'd forgotten/stumbled over a few lyrics here or there...he was hittin' a few "dead" strokes inadvertently (where he either just wasn't getting a finger there in time, else not depressing the string hard enough)...though he still played multiple sets with various performers. I remember telling an old friend of mine (i hadn't seen since highschool, but ran into out there)as the sun was setting on Saturday Night - "I sure am glad to be here this year", it went unspoken, but we were both convinced Doc proh'lee didn't have too many more Merlefests left in him. Of course, a month ago I don't think any of us really saw this coming.
And Yes, for those of you who are not familiar with him - he lost his sight before his 1st birthday.
