Theater rooms

Talk about anything here. Post lifespan is 1 year.

I'm planning on building a theater room in our unfinished 3rd or 4th level. Just looking for ideas on size, AV equipment and any other ideas would be greatly appreciated.

To start, the best theater rooms are in the basement.

I should've been more clear. I call my 3rd level (walk out basement) and 4th level (an actual basement)

But being serious, what's your general plan? TV or projector, in-wall speakers or not, anything you need/want, or are you starting at square zero?

Going to be starting from scratch. I do have an old 5.1 Yamaha receiver and some vintage Fisher speakers. I think it's time to retire those and build a new system. Going to go with a projector. With the length of the room I'm hoping to go with a 100" screen.

Wow those speakers look amazing and I've heard so many great things about Dolby Atmos. I really need to get out and go listen to some speakers in person. I haven't ever really shopped for speakers before.

I think I'm going to go with floor standing speakers for ease of change/upgrade.

My theater room is 90% complete, which I am using now. I'm not sure exactly what you are looking for, but I went with the following:

13' x 15' room... in basement... no ambient light
Black ceiling (Sherwin Williams)
Dark grey walls (Sherwin Williams)
It has a stand-alone 20A fuse with 12 GA wire
4 can lights, on two dimmers, controlling 2 in front and 2 in rear.. the fronts are near the outside walls and the rears are centered behind the seating
Wired for 8.2.2 throughout the walls (yes, I know the 8th channel is not a real channel)
-Monster in-wall rated cables
-Monoprice banana plugs, wall plates, keystone connectors, etc
-Mediabridge RCA cables (for subwoofers)
-Sony HDMI cables
M&K Speakers
-S-100B fronts and center (3)
-S-125 rears, sides, and atmos (6)
-MX-200 subwoofers (2)
Yamaha RX-A2060 receiver... not yet purchased (running my old v1000 for the moment)
BenQ HT2150ST Projector, mounted 9' (ceiling) from the screen and sized to 135"
A/V connections
-Xbox One, with DirectTV pass through
-Raspberry Pi

I went with a pocket door (an AV no-no).
I have multiple movie posters on the wall (another AV no-no).
I filled the walls and ceiling with Rolux Safe n' Sound insulation, 1/2" drywall.
I still need to decide on some sound deadening materials.
I haven't decided on screen material yet, but have samples from a few places... will be going with something white to increase contrast.

I've been watching movies and playing games around 135" @ 10' from the screen... basically wall-to-wall, leaving space only for the speakers.

Just just throw my 2 cents in on one thing. As an audio engineer in the past, dont drop the loot for Monster branded audio cables unless you have a friend who gets cost pricing. Copper cable is copper cable, there's a reason you just make all your own cabling when doing audio work, cause its all the same as long as you have good connectors (if needed).

I definitely agree with that copper is copper. Not going to shell out the extra cash for a name. Definitely going to get some good gold plated connectors though. That's all I ever use.

How does the 20A circuit hold up with both power subs and the receiver running off it? Any dimming of the lights with it cranked up to 11?

What is the approximate cost for AV equipment for a mid range theater room set up with a projector? I have a room in the basement for one but it is behind a redo of the nasty basement bathroom. Truth be told the whole basement needs to be gutted
