Entry-level IT job

Talk about anything here. Post lifespan is 1 year.

Postby Bikejoh on Mon Jun 08, 2015 10:48 pm

I got a job with the College of Engineering at my university, where I'll be in a helpdesk setting, troubleshooting over the phone and going out to faculty and staff that need help.

I like to figure out problems and it feels good to help people, especially by using computer knowledge. I really think I'll like it, the pay's pretty good for being able to sit around all day. Certainly beats selling computers at Best Buy. :vomit:

Probably not something I'd do as a career, but definitely good for the next two years until I graduate.

What can I expect? How can I prepare?

Oh, Best Buy did that to me quick. However, I blame the retail aspect forcing me to shove useless knowledge and rapport-building banter down their throat. At least here I'm helping them understand problems logically.

I hate to agree...but what Finn said

And always remember. Google is your friend. Just a word of advice so your coworkers won't hate you either. Always try to figure it out yourself before asking for help. Nothing worse than new (or old) help desk guys asking me for help because their too damn lazy to figure it out themselves.

No I'm not jaded either :P

Only two things required to succeed in a help desk

1. Be able to diffuse the biggest assholes in the world who are angry because they don't know what the hell a start button is. Seriously...learn how to make the most difficult end users happy
2. Be able to try and solve technical issues on your own through Google or whatever resources you have available

Oh yeah, I plan to use Google intensively. I already got the worst advice anyone could have given me: "Don't be afraid to ask questions". Thanks for clearing that up.

Just to be clear. It's ok to ask questions. But don't make it your crutch. Just show that you've tried to figure it out before asking for help

Don't be afraid to ask questions.

...just make sure to ask them of google, not of other people.

Be mindful of your posture and work set up. It's easy to slouch and after a few years it can really take a toll on your back / neck / arms

Become a condescending prick and do nothing without major exasperation and attention.

Yeah that's a big one. I don't mind helping people out at all but at least try and figure it out yourself first.
Also be ready to be very patient with people. Hopefully being in a college setting means you wont be dealing with too many Luddites but they're out there.
