Anybody stay up and catch the Perseid Meteor shower last night? Pretty spectacular stuff!

Usually my friends and I are in Welfleet on Cape Cod during the showers but our trip is moved out a couple weeks this year. Always has been great viewing up there every year, even if we probably were seeing double by that time of night.
I'll give it a go tonight from southwestern CT, but enough light pollution to make most night sky gazing barely tolerable in comparison.

Wellfleet? No kidding, I lived there as a kid. Don't think I've ever heard of somebody going there for anything but the Beachcomber.simianfever wrote:Usually my friends and I are in Welfleet on Cape Cod during the showers but our trip is moved out a couple weeks this year. Nice. I always wonder what the winters are like up there for residents.Hutwe wrote: Wellfleet? No kidding, I lived there as a kid. Don't think I've ever heard of somebody going there for anything but the Beachcomber.
We've been going for 15 years, annual trip. Not sure how we settled on Wellfleet. I think someone was familiar with the Beachcomber from working summers on the Cape. It's pretty perfect setup with the bar/restaurant on top of the dunes and once you get down to the beach you can walk a 1/4 mile or so to the left and essentially not see a soul aside from the bobbing staring heads of sea lions. Drink/smoke all day, be as rambunctious as you want. Though we were a lot more crazy when we were 22 and started it.
Also not far from Provincetown which can be a trip to take in. I like that's its the more remote generally less populated part of the Cape and all the freshwater ponds are cool too.
This bad boy makes Sandy look like a kitten. Projected 175 mph winds at landfall in the Philippines, and a predicted sixty (6-muthafuckin-0!) foot storm surge.

Hey everyone, go outside and look up at the moon tonight. Look a little to the left and you'll see one bright, bright, bright "star". You'll see it immediately. But it's not a star... it's Jupiter!

Just watched Rick Mastracchio and Mike Hopkins perform their spacewalk to replace the broken cooling pump on the international space station. They completed the mission successfully. Great work by some skilled astronauts. Rick Mastracchio moved into 6th place all time (4th place for U.S. astronauts) on the spacewalking list in terms of time. It was his 8th spacewalk for a total of more than 51 hours in space.

Is anyone/everyone watching the new Cosmos series? Seen both episodes so far and they're really fun and creative. My daughter is drinking them up. Sagan would be proud.
I have been meaning to stream them the past two nights. Did anyone catch that video clip of the Stanford professor when his student came to tell him his theory on inflation (the bang of the big bang) has been proven? Check it below
