1 pill helps with something but causes side effects and needs 2 new pills to correct that. Money money money!!! If drugs were curing people they would be out of a job.

Simple scientific concept -gravity. Check out how these guys are harnessing it. The gravity lamp. I think this might be the greatest invention in a loooong time. Talk about changing the world...

Gravity exists between two objects that have mass, but it has not been clearly understood how the objects detect each other. It that was understood, it could bring about things like anti-gravity which would be awesome and open the world of space travel. I think the discovery of the particle that converts energy to mass is one step closer to understanding the fundamentals of gravity.

Can anyone say hoverboard? I've always wanted one.

This is getting a bit off topic, but my personal belief is that we won't get to Utopia (or anything remotely close) until after we eliminate religion. And the only way religion has ANY chance of going away is with science. I don't think we'll ever be able to PROVE that the universe wasn't created by God, but if we can expand our sphere of knowledge enough to discover life elsewhere in the universe we MIGHT get lucky and have that be the staw that breaks religions back.

Anyway, more on topic....while I enjoy reading about many different fields of science, my personal favorites are probably extremeophiles and creatures that through either evolution or mutation have developed strange and interesting characteristics.

Great link from DrewJ about the Apollo 11 moon landing. Put together by the Kennedy Library. A must visit!

Also, the Cassini Spacecraft will be encountering Titan again in 5 days. It's amazing. Many/most don't even know about the Cassini mission. NASA has been so successful with planetary exploration, the public now finds it routine/boring.

Also, NASA launched two missiles in their own 4th of July display. It's a scientific mission to investigate electrical eddies in the upper atmosphere.

Have we learned anything practical from all this money we have dumped into the space program?

Here's some more to add to desch's post:

Not to mention, the space program has inspired millions of people in their everyday lives - not to mention a generation of scientists, engineers etc.

It also is, as Jimmy Carter said in his message on the recording on Voyager, our first step "to join a community of galactic civilizations."

Just noticed this thread and figured it had to have this video in here. It's been on my Facebook for years.
